Amazing building. A converted chapel I believe? Food looked great but was disappointing. Steak was chewy and full of gristle. Stella was chilled and plentiful. Lots of old folk sitting at tables chatting over a drink. Not many young people at 3pm on a Saturday. I'm sure it livens up later in the evening. It's very noisy in the Peto as it's a hollow building with a full balcony upstairs. Reminds me of the Ramsgate spoons but much smaller in scale.
I popped by last week as I'm always quite inquisitive to see how a Wetherspoons pub I've never frequented before has been restored... This one located centrally in the town centre was converted from a church, and like a good majority of Wetherspoons pub it's done up quite nicely. Originally a Salem Chapel, which is congregational church, the building's construction was largely funded by a loan from Samuel Morton Peto, who was also a baptist. The building was officially made a Grade II listed premises back in March 1975. Like all Wetherspoons, the menu is quite standard and the service was good... So it's probably what you would expect...
We were really impressed by this pub, its quite stunning! The Food was excellent, 10 out of 10! service was quick, the Villa Maria was perfectly chilled can't stand warm wine staff very friendly. We had no trouble at all finding a seat upstairs on a Sunday afternoon! Highly recommend!
This pub is fascinating! It used to be a church and many of the features have been kept. An unusual experience having dinner in front of organ pipes! Pizza was nice and service was good. My daughter and I particularly enjoyed the toilet signs!!
I would give more than 5 stars. Everything was excellent, interior, atmosphere, staff, food and beer. Definitely one the most amazing pubs
Update Since the review below I have returned to the pub and glad to say this 'Spoons has definitely improved, which is a good thing as it is a really interesting pub. We had both dinner and breakfast on the same weekend and I am pleased to say that there were no problems and everything was brought out promptly and was worth the money. It is in an old church and has some fantastic little ecclesiastical touches which makes it really unique. I have increased the rating to three stars as recently everything has been good but only three stars because some of the times things can go very wrong here. See old review below. What a disaster!! The utter incompetence of the staff here pretty much ruined our evening. They got almost everything wrong. Dirty, unsanitised tables, delayed food all brought out at different times, followed by poor quality dinners some if which went back for a replacement. In the end the whole fiasco took so long that we were still eating our dinner when the security guard threw us out because it was 9.00pm and we had our children with us. I tried to explain but he said there was no exceptions and we had to leave. A completely rubbish experience.
Fabulous use of an old building the ceilings are, as you can see, more than interesting, a real change from the norm Good food, friendly staff, well done Wetherspoons
What a stunning place to eat n drink. Nice food with pleasant staff
Very basic. We've used Wetherspoons for years, but this was not a good visit. Sirloin steak and chips is now JUST steak and chips. Salad is an extra! Plus it was just about warm. All 6 meals ordered were not to usual good value for money. Cutlery came out late. One child pizza out late. So not good.
Well positioned in the centre of town. Good selection of drinks and meals. No parking facilities. All staff are young smiling quick and efficient with most very handsome and attractive. Beautiful surroundings, quite cold during winter months. Caters more for the younger set. Can be lively Friday nights.
