If you’re after a smooth landing into the weekly shop, Waitrose at Fossetts Way in Southend feels rather like stepping into a very calm First Class cabin only with a trolley instead of a seat. The car park alone deserves a round of applause: spacious, stress-free and no need to circle endlessly as if you’re stacking over Heathrow.nnInside, the atmosphere is relaxed and refined, with aisles wide enough to glide through without turbulence. The shelves carry those familiar luxury brands you’d expect, yet what I particularly appreciate is the Essential Waitrose range. It’s proof that good quality doesn’t have to come at a premium fare well priced, well made, and frankly, it keeps the weekly shop grounded.nnThe bakery is a highlight: cakes that could rival a patisserie trolley at 35,000 feet. The delicatessen is another treat, staffed by a gentleman who went above and beyond to be helpful the sort of attentive service that makes you feel looked after, not just served. At the checkout, a wonderfully chatty lady brightened the end of my shop with warmth and humour, a reminder that good service is about human connection as much as efficiency.nnAnd let’s not forget the John Lewis selection tucked within a clever touch that turns a grocery run into a mini department store visit.nnAll in all, a seamless shopping experience. Bravo, Waitrose Southend, you’ve kept standards flying high.
Very disappointed with our lunch. We wanted poached eggs on toast. Apparently its only offered with sourdough. Why? There's plenty of alternative bread.nMy husband had one slice that was quite large, but the other slice must have been from the end of the loaf as it was tiny. Sourdough, when toasted, is hard and it was like crunching on rocks. Worse though was that the 'poached eggs' were NOT poached. They were two soft boiled eggs that were shelled and plonked on the rock-hard bread. The food was luke warm, and I suspect it had all been prepared earlier and reheated. I just wish I'd complained at the time.
Great place to shop. The atmosphere is calming and you don't have the same rushed feeling as you do with other supermarkets. Usually well stocked and clean. The deliveries from this store are excellent aswell, I often receive my full order and drivers are always polite and helpful.
Doyen of the affluent middle classes and you have to admit the food and drink is good.nnYou know it's a bit posh because the staff smile at you, even though they are a paid a few pennies more than the minimum wage. That staff discount must be damn good.
The store has a decent selection but it is perhaps the shabbiest Waitrose I've ever been in, particularly the chilled aisles where paint has come off the fridges and so on. The faded signage with the old logo in the car park is also not a good look. It's a nice idea to combine groceries with JLP non-food goods but the selection is no great and the store looks sparsely stocked as a result. Based on the usual high standards of JLP retail outlets this branch is quite a let down - ripe for a refurb and perhaps a bit more effort going in to the non-food side of things.
