Story

Pub managers welcome return to Roche

Regulars at the popular Victoria Inn are welcoming back some old faces as Steve and Louise Dawe return to take on the management of the historic coaching house on the old A30 on the outskirts of Roche.

Having first met when they worked at the pub many years ago, Steve and Louise have since worked together at a number of different and successful venues, gathering over 30 years of experience in the pub trade between them and getting married along the way.

Delighted to be picking up the reins at their favourite watering hole, Steve commented, “We are really excited to be back living in Roche and relishing the challenge of bringing the Victoria back into the local community. We love the old pub and returning with our two children we’re looking forward to settling down for the long term future. We are passionate about delivering great food and drink and can’t wait to pass on that passion to our staff and our guests."

The Victoria has been part of the award-winning St Austell Brewery estate of Westcountry pubs and hotels since 1943 and was recently taken on by established publicans Justin Barnett and Mark Holden.

As long-standing and much-loved landlords at another Vic - the Victoria in Threemilestone - Justin and Mark will be working closely with Steve and Louise to bring their successful combination of providing great pub grub and creating a beating heart for the local community to the Victoria at Roche.

Speaking of the challenge, Mark said, “Over the last few years we have put in a lot of our own hearts to make the Vic at Threemilestone the success story it is. Thanks to local people and organisations we have raised over £30,000 for charity and together we have created a special place for local people to come to. We know that Steve and Louise will be able do the same at Roche and they are looking forward to getting to know everyone there again and to putting the Victoria firmly back where it belongs as a real community pub.”

Spur of the moment place for an evening meal. Staff and service was amazing. Ended up just having the “sausages and mash” for a nice simple, homely and filling meal and it delivered in every way. Delicious starters and mains all round just a shame was too full to try any desserts!
Such a nice pub, and really great food! I've heard a lot of positive reviews about the Victoria Inn, but its years since I visited last. However, after the lovely meal and warm welcome we received last night, it wont be long before we return! Our food was delicious, and we couldn't be happier with our meal. The restaurant was busy, but not crowded and the staff were brilliant. Would definitely recommend!
Another really good experience last night. The food was amazing as usual. However, I have given 4 stars instead of 5 this time because my pineapple juice was very warm so had either been poured into a warm glass that had just been washed or had not been refrigerated. Overall though another fantastic experience. We will be back again soon. Many thanks to all the staff who were very friendly and accommodating.
Excellent venue for a meeting, Food and drink. Upstairs seat about 15 - 20, ceiling projector all set up for Zoom conference calls. Then after, you are well situated for drink and food in the Bar area. There is wide selection of Food, it's cooked well and delivered with a smile all in all a lovely place.
A lovely pub serving good foods and drinks
Wonderful breakfast this morning at Roche Victoria Inn. Had breakfasts with loads of toast - Excellent value for money, all cooked perfectly. The service was outstanding, Laura really looked after us and even brought our toddler some colouring in. Great atmosphere in the pub. Can’t wait to pop in again !
I know that this pub is famed in the area for it's great pub grub. For one reason or another this was my first visit and I have to report that it was excellent. Staff were lovely and very helpful, the food was excellent and the prices did not break the bank. If you want fine dining give it a miss but for good honest food this is a winner. Will have to go back again soon
Not a bad price for drinks considering it's attached to hotel. The issue I had was the customers had to put up with 3 drunks at the bar. The language was terrible and loud. This in its self was not the hotels fault, but it was obvious that the bar staff were friends. They made no attempt to calm them down in any way. One family with children got up and walked out. I was about to do the same, but fortunately they left. My gripe is, if these are your friends. then have some control as it's so unfair on hotel guests.
Delicious food today, good gluten free options available. Friendly helpful staff and dog friendly. We had chicken wings to start then beef rigatoni penne as GF and lamb shank. Service fantastic, would recommend stopping if your hungry.
The carvery was really good and I'd probably say the best I've had in a long time. Desserts were tasty and a good size as well. Thanks.
