Verulamium Museum

Story

Verulamium was a town in Roman Britain. It was sited in the southwest of the modern city of St Albans in Hertfordshire, Great Britain. A large portion of the Roman city remains unexcavated, being now park and agricultural land, though much has been built upon (see below). The ancient Watling Street passed through the city. Much of the site and its environs is now classed as a scheduled ancient monument.HistoryBefore the Romans established their settlement, there was already a tribal centre in the area which belonged to the Catuvellauni. This settlement is usually called Verlamion. The etymology is uncertain but the name has been reconstructed as *Uerulāmion, which would have a meaning like " of the broad hand" (Uerulāmos) in Brittonic. In this pre-Roman form, it was among the first places in Britain recorded by name. The settlement was established by Tasciovanus, who minted coins there. The Roman settlement was granted the rank of municipium around AD 50, meaning its citizens had what were known as "Latin Rights", a lesser citizenship status than a colonia possessed. It grew to a significant town, and as such received the attentions of Boudica of the Iceni in 61, when Verulamium was sacked and burnt on her orders: a black ash layer has been recorded by archaeologists, thus confirming the Roman written record. It grew steadily; by the early 3rd century, it covered an area of about 125acre, behind a deep ditch and wall. It is the location of the martyrdom of the first British martyr saint, Saint Alban, who was a Roman patrician converted by the priest Amphibalus.

An amazing display of Iron Age and Roman artefacts. The preservation of the floors and walls was great to see. I think this is certainly a 5 star rating except for the ridiculous price separation for visiting the Roman theatre as separate to visiting the museum. Staff were friendly and museum well laid out with ample parking (pay and display) right next door. I will be visiting the Waffle House around the corner when I visit again. Thanks for a great effort.

When we went on Sunday there was a nice talk about funerary and mortuary Roman traditions. Staff was very friendly, and there are some interesting artefacts there. Would recommend for people visiting St Albans, but I would not go back. It is small and a one day visit does enough.

Good car park in terms of size and price (roughly a quarter of the price compared to where we live) but it got busy early. Interesting place with friendly staff, good for a relaxing hour or two but smaller than we were expecting. Ruins and cathedral both within walking distance if the weather plays ball.

Great place to visit, wonderful information on roman life and artefacts in the town. Good for adults and children. Reasonably priced, I highly recommend to spend a few hours here.

Great little museum but large enough to hold the interest of an 7 and 8 old. They had an opportunity to design their own mosaic and could dress up in Roman clothes. At the beginning they were given a work sheet of a list of items to find; kept them interested. There is an opportunity to see the roman theatre but we didn't as it's outside and it was a cold day.
