Story

University Hospital of Wales is a major 1000-bed hospital in the Heath district of Cardiff, Wales. UHW is a teaching hospital of Cardiff University School of Medicine. Construction started in 1963 with the official opening in 1971. It was Europe's first fully integrated hospital and medical school at a cost of £22 million. The hospital is the third largest University Hospital in the UK and the largest hospital in Wales. The hospital was previously part of Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust. In 2009 the Trust was dissolved and the hospital is now operated by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

We had our first daughter there six years ago, and the experience was truly amazing. The service from the entire team was excellent, especially the nurses who supported us at every step. During those 72 hours, I learned so much from them. They were patient, kind, and always available when we needed help.nnLooking back, I am extremely grateful for everything they did for us. At the time, we were focused on our newborn and didn’t get a chance to properly thank the staff for their incredible care. Sometimes you only realise the impact of someone’s support after some time has passed.nnTo all the team and nurses who helped us, thank you. Absolutely awful hospital!nThe level of care in the children’s hospital is appalling considering this is the main hospital in wales.nNumerous times have staff nearly killed my son in this hospital .. 3 times resulting in transfers over to Bristol children’s hospital and ending up ICU. Doctors Egos get in the way of actual compassion and listening to parents. Delays in medications. Departments cannot communicate between eachother to save their lives. Lack of training given to parents of children with long term illnesses. So many issues that get brushed under the carpet or you get threatened with social services for arguing your point for your child who is non verbal and being their voice. Attitudes on staff is shameful and they have no place to be working with children and making them more miserable in a place they have to go to get better.Cubicals / bays aren’t cleaned properly.. for instance we went in on a Tuesday used plasters on the floor , crisps from another person on the floor and just black filth on chairs. Came back the following day on Wednesday to the same bed space keep in mind they are meant to be deep cleaned between patients the same crisps used plasters and filth still there!!!! If I could give 0 stars then the heath hospital would be getting that.
Why does the hospital pharmacy close at 5? So many community pharmacy's make the effort to open until say 6pm and that extra time makes a massive difference to people. You have nurses working back to back 12 hour shifts but can't keep your pharmacy open for a short while longer?
Does the Cardiac Physiology department ever answer their phone? They ask you to give early notice if you can’t make an appointment. Been trying for a week. Was told by Appointments general that they can’t help. Great. I’ll write a letter. I assume it’s the same number if you’re having problems with a pacemaker. No issues with staff or treatment other than this.
I took myself to the EU on Friday evening with pain in my abdomen. Yes I waited for a good few hours in the emergency unit, which I had anticipated- but every single doctor / nurse that I encountered was considerate, caring and attentive. This was my first time having a surgery of any kind and I cannot thank the nurses and surgeons enough for making my experience as gentle as it possibly could be. Thank you all for all that you do.
