Exploring Totnes, Devon : A Journey Through Time!nTotnes is a charming market town in Devon, brimming with history and a vibrant atmosphere, offering a delightful mix of medieval architecture, independent shops, cafes, and beautiful natural scenery.nTotnes Castle is a classic Norman motte and bailey castle that offers breathtaking views over the town and River Dart.nOn this visit, we travelled on a Heritage steam train from Buckfastleigh to Totnes, enjoying a glorious Devon scenic route. We then walked through Totnes town, savored Cornish pastries, and finally explored Totnes Castle, capping off our historical journey.
Stopped by in this lovely town of Totnes to visit the castle. It is worth visiting despite there's not much to see, but the views from it are stunning.
This is a lovely little castle to visit. It's definitely worth stopping off here if you're visiting the Medieval town of Totnes, especially if you're an English Heritage member. There's a steep climb up to the keep which would be unsuitable for anyone with mobility problems, but the views on a clear day are worth it!
The castle is thought to have been built by one of William the Conquerors commanders, Juhel. Originally a man made earth mound with timber structure the castle had been re-structured using stone. Although this is not a very large site, as some of the reviewers mention, it is very well preserved and you can feel the gravitas of this sights location from the walk along the keep walls. Panoramic views in all directions.nUnfortunately this sight would need large investment to make the sight fully accessible by those differently abled, so wheelchair users can only access the bottom part of the sight.nIt isn't an all day attraction but still way worth the visit and to spark the minds of youngsters.
Lovely views from the top of the castle, very helpful and informative staff, well worth a visit
