This Norman castle is pretty interesting to visit and offers a great view point over Totnes. We also enjoyed the baby Seagulls that most likely hatched there with their parents coming from time to time to watch over them and bring them food.
A fantastic Castle and Bailey with commanding views out across Totnes. Built to stamp authority over the nearby River Dart at the lowest crossing point of the time. History tells us that this castle resulted from the Norman invasion and was likely placed on what was already a raised area, further heightened artificially. These days the modern town makes it harder to make out the river.
The fee supports the trust, which is a good cause but there is not much to see other than the view of the village from the castle. Besides the wall, everything else has long disappeared.
Small castle occupying a commanding position overlooking Totnes and the Dart, located just above the attractive historic High Street.nThe castle is a typical example of a motte-and-bailey construction, with later alterations including the crenellated keep, added in the 13th century. This is accessed by a curving flight of stone steps, well worth ascending for the views from the keep.nThe castle's bailey and outer defences are now home to trees and spring flowers, worth exploring while visiting, and there's a little public garden just outside the castle grounds.nAt the time of our visit, adult tickets were £5.90, the affordable pricing reflecting the site's small size. Advance online bookings benefit from a small discount. On-site facilities include a gift shop with cold drinks for sale. Dogs on leads are welcome. There's no onsite parking or toilet facilities.
Pleasant stop if you’re doing the Dartmouth steam railway round robin. Nice view. It’s a small monument
