Story

Newcastle Theatre Royal is the leading theatre in the North East.

Every year we present over 400 performances to over 300,000 people, and host the region's favourite pantomime.

HISTORY OF THE THEATRE ROYAL

Granted its Royal licence by King George III, the Theatre Royal Newcastle opened on Drury Lane off Mosley Street in 1788 and soon established itself as one of England’s leading theatres.

Three months before Queen Victoria ascended the throne, in February 1837, the Theatre moved to Grey Street, a flagship building in Grainger and Dobson’s famous city plan. It features what is generally regarded as the finest Theatre façade in the UK, later combined with a fine 1901 auditorium by one of the great Theatre architects, Frank Matcham after the original interior had been destroyed by fire in 1899.

Over the centuries, many of the great names of the English stage have played at the Royal, from Keane to Irving, Olivier to Dench and the Hollywood greats Orson Welles, Charlton Heston and Jack Lemmon have also trodden the famous boards. In 2009 the modern great Sir Ian McKellen described the Theatre Royal Newcastle as his favourite theatre.

The Grade I Listed Theatre today is both neo-classical monument and cultural engine, with an annual audience of 337,000 and over 400 performances each year. The third home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, alongside Stratford-upon-Avon and London, its programme is rich and varied featuring world-class drama, including National Theatre productions, an Opera North Season, and a rich array of contemporary dance, musicals and comedy.

Great show, the venue is fab, it's my favourite in the north east. Our seats were very comfortable and easily accessible. The facilities were easy to find and it didn't feel too crowded as often these type of venues do. Exiting was quick and painless too. Overall a great venue made even better by come from away.
A good example of reading what the show is going to entail before booking! I assumed Edward Scissorhands, was going to be a play, theatre production based on the film…I suppose in someways it was. However it was a dance version, no words, a story told with dance! My wife thoroughly enjoyed it, I on the other hand wished I’d read the description before booking. Nonetheless the dancing was fantastic, and for what bits of the story I could follow it was rather entertaining. We sat in the stalls, row P, seats 10-11 and the view was superb. Not sure you would get a bad view in the stalls. I do get a tad annoyed at the Theatre’s token gesture for those who do not drink, Becks Blue. Seriously, nowadays this is a poor effort, at least offer a few options. Maybe a cider or an IPA. Becks Blue is one up from a Kaliber! Loses a star for this. Other than that I do enjoy the Theatre, highly recommend.
The wife and I went along to see the Wizard of Oz and it was brilliant. Been a couple of times and the Theatre Royal is an absolutely superb building inside and out. The staff we made contact with were very helpful. I would highly recommend booking to see a performance as the atmosphere is fantastic. I've already been online and booked up for another performance in June. Can't wait.
I do love going to the theatre and this was a great show. It is, however, much harder when you are with a wheelchair user. There is only 1 lift for the entire theatre, and it fits one wheelchair in. This creates a delay. There were several wheelchair users waiting to use it, and several people with mobility Disabilities as well as those who didn't appear to need to use it at all. This does mean missing parts of the show as you can't get to the accessible toilet without going in the lift. There were also some very drunk and loud people in the theatre, and some people next to us had to be told off around 20 times, which was annoying. We also had issues with the accessible toilet as some mortal drunk women decided to vom in it. All of the above, not the theatres' fault, so hence why I still give it 4 stars as it is generally a lovely theatre.
Went to watch Heathers on a Friday afternoon what a treat Excellent venue comfy seats and a good stage view The theatre has retained it's historic feel with a wonderful atmosphere. The theatre is situated right next to some good restaurants and bars. Overall a brilliant experience
First visit to this theatre, just stunning. Beautiful architecture both inside and out. A short walk from Newcastle Central Station with plenty of options nearby by for food and refreshments. Very good facilities for all, the toilets were very well presented. A variety of seating options. Interval refreshments can be ordered in advance. There was a bar available between each of the floors. Tubs of ice-cream were readily available, as dictated by tradition. It was comfortable and temperate within the theatre itself, which made for a good watch. I attended with a friend to see Sleeping Beauty a Ballet. The sound quality and lighting were very good. The costumes of this production were as superb as the performers. It's such a wonderful treat.
We went there recently to see an opera. Waited a long time to see this Opera, Cavalleria Rusticana, and it was well worth the wait. Known as the opera that invented the mafia. We were 2nd row from front and centre, so a great view. Newcastle Theatre Royal is a wonderful theatre, and the acoustics are great. Especially for an opera and a full orchestra playing. The theatre itself is always clean and the staff very helpful and friendly. Carole & Phil Washington, UK March 2024
Myself sister and friend have just been to see the wizard of oz this afternoon at the theatre royal in Newcastle. What a fantastic show it was so glad we went to see it. The staff were great and very helpful. But most of all the cast was fantastic they put on an excellent show from start to finish. We will certainly be going back to see a lot more shows this year and hopefully more in the future. Yours sincerely Miss Sandra Burns
Great venue for top class theatre. Seating is comfortable. Toilets are super clean. The seats in my experience can sometimes be really dusty triggering allergies.
Went on my own to kill sometime in the middle of mums taxi duty comfortable and enjoyable show such a beautiful theatre
