The Wenlock Arms

Story

The Wenlock Arms is a public house in London, which reopened on Friday 14 January 1994. The pub is located halfway between Old Street and Angel, just off the City Road and the City Road Basin and Wenlock Basin on the Regent's Canal. The pub has won awards for the quality and range of its cask ales.HistoryThe Wenlock Arms first opened for business in 1836 and was operated by the nearby Wenlock Brewery as a "brewery tap".John Lane (1808–1873) owned and ran the Wenlock Brewery from 1840 until his death, initially as "Lane & Bowden" (the 1842 Post Office Directory mentions “LANE & BOWDEN, Ale Brewers, 9 Wenlock Road”). John's brother-in-law, John Mitchell (1813–1868), was brewery foreman in 1851 (mentioned in the census). Various other members of the Mitchell family worked at the brewery from time to time. These included John Mitchell's older brother Thomas (mentioned in the census as being foreman at the brewery in 1871), another John Mitchell (a cousin; c. 1820–1849), as well as at least three of John Lane's brothers. Yet another John Mitchell, John Hoffe Mitchell, was joint executor of John Lane's will.In 1873, ownership passed to John Lane's youngest son, Robert George. Robert, after brewing in Alton, Hampshire, and marrying Parisienne Louise Marie Julienne Isabel Jean dit Saussay in 1876, died of pneumonia in 1880, aged only 31. After this the brewery became the property of one Richard Alfred Glover, before being taken over by Glover Bell & Co in 1887.

On my visit very much a locals' pub, but certainly welcoming and polite. Busy even on a Saturday early afternoon. Beers well kept e.g. 5 points derailed porter, which is always a pleasure to see on in autumn. 3 or 4 cask beers on.Food: 3/5
A lovely pub on a housing estate close to Angel and Old Street. The pub sells a wide range of cask ales and a small selection of bottled beers including some from Belgium. I did not see a food menu, but the bar staff appeared to be making many cheese/cheese and ham sandwiches ready to become toasties. I drank an excellent pint of stout.
What you need a pub to be. A square corner, preserved heritage, vibe focused London community pub with independent brewery legacy. Plenty of pub swing doors into a spacious drinking hall with centrepiece square bar. Vintage, decorative papered ceiling and walls. Simple, classic droplet lamps, understated coving, archway and subtle curved wall edges against the large, name painted windows. It's light and calm in this relaxed, volume appropriate happy classic tuned, friends and community social house. The back bar is an original gem with decorative mirroring, decorative, aged pillars and feature figurines on the overhead with a well loved, vintage bar front and counter. There's wide wood floorboard, bench edge seating and mini stools, comfortable in space and feeling. The original fireplace is overlooked by a heritage cut glass brewery mirror. Vintage decorative pub arts feature on the walls. There's darts and a piano you can imagine many gather rounds have been held. The superb selection of small batch, independent beers on draught compliment this hidden beauty pub with heritage vibes in it's own confidence in the past and what it represents.
Lovely local pub with good selection of drinks to enjoy over live music by the amazing pianist!Food: 3/5
Excellent pub about 10 minutes walk from Old Street Station. Eight cask beers on handpump when I last visited including a stout. A few seats outside. Very friendly and helpful staff. Dartboard and piano!Service: 5/5
Very fun pub for a night. Had a great meat pie there too with proper spicy horseradish mustard. Nice ales as well.Food: 5/5
A decent local with an excellent range of beers. Friendly staff. If you’re a beer fan it’s definitely worth a visit. Recommended.Service: 4/5
A brilliant backstreet pub on the borders of Hoxton. Surprise, actually on Wenlock Street. Lovely people behind the bar, service smart and knowledgeable. Beer is good with a fine eclectic choice of ales both on cask and keg. A lovely place to visit!
Old Street  £5.20 Budvar The quintessential London Pub. . The Wenlock Arms is located in a quiet backstreet in Hoxton and is just a ten minute walk from Old Street station. A more picturesque journey would be to walk from Angel tube which means you can stroll along tranquil Regents Canal. . The pub was built in 1835 and is somewhat of a survivor. This pub survived the blitz unlike much of the surrounding area, it also survived demolition in 2010 when developers shysters didn’t get their way for once due to a vigorous local campaign that saved the pub. . The decor here is traditional with a horseshoe shaped bar taking centre stage. Around the bar are leather sofa benches with weathered round tables that have seen many a pint placed on them. There’s a dartboard If you fancy a game of arrows and also a Joanna incase someone wants to “Roll out the barrel “ .The walls are adorned with beautiful etched mirrors which complete the old world charm feel to this boozer. . This pub has won numerous awards for its beer, this is a ale and cider drinker’s paradise. There are 10 cask, 10 keg, plus real ciders to wet your whistle. Being the uncultured imbiber that I am, I chose a pint of Budvar which was tip top and very reasonably priced. If you’re a bit peckish then pies and toasties are available. . The atmosphere was relaxed and chilled with a few local punters in and a chap from New York in attendance. The Guv’nor was very chatty with the crowd in and is clearly passionate about his pub. . London has many institutions and for me The London Pub is the most important institution as it binds communities and people together. The @wenlockarms is the quintessential London Pub which epitomises what a London pub should be. The beer, the building, the ambiance, the hospitality, what a fantastic boozer. . ℹ Info correct on visiting 27/08/22
It had been about 20 years since I'd visited the Wenlock. I wasn't disappointed. It hadn't gone through a dreadful refurbishment making it a soulless place with an identikit interior. It was still an authentic boozer with an amazing 10 real ales on the pumps. There was also a selection of craft ales for those who prefer keg. A DJ was playing an eclectic mix of music, from The Cure and Edwyn Collins to GC Cameron and George Benson. We had a great time, and it won't be another 20 years before I go back.
