We had a lovely and quick lunch here and our tour in Chester. It took a few minutes for our waitress to realise we wanted to be seated, but there are two entrance ways into the cafe. The menu had a good variety of items and after we ordered our tea and sandwiches arrived very quickly. Everything tasted very good. If we hadn't been in such a rush we probably would have ordered one of their delicious looking desserts. The price was pretty reasonable and the atmosphere was very unique. Eating sandwiches underneath the vaulted ceiling was very fun. The historical information on the walls was fascinating to read. A fun place to have a quick bite.
I should have known better, the dog-eared, tea-splattered paper menus set the tone. I considered leaving immediately but we were on a tight schedule. The tea was good, just a shame the teapot had old drips on it and neither cup or saucer were clean. I liked the option for skimmed milk. The limited menu was not a problem we only wanted a sandwich but the ham and cheese toasty was not tasty, it was dry with cheap tasting ham. My husband's cheese and chutney sandwich had so much chutney you only knew the cheese was there by texture. These cost over £5. I am not a fan of Subway but they provide better product and value. To add to the misery the wedges we added to our order were very dry, must have been prepared hours in advance and kept warm. The staff were friendly and efficient. Such a shame as something fabulous could be made of the wonderful setting. I however will not be back.
Been here a few times on visits to Chester. A unique café in a 13th century crypt. I enjoyed reading about the history of Chester on the timeline and wall plaques! Lovely scones and cakes. Had a delicious cherry slice and the mocha was also very good. Service was quick. A convenient and atmospheric place to take a break while shopping or sightseeing.
My mother and I visited here after a day of shopping in Chester a couple of weeks ago and I can't recommend it enough for afternoon tea. For the price, I think it was roughly £7.50pp or £14 for two people we weren't actually expecting very much but we couldn't have been more wrong! We got a prawn mayo & rocket, and an egg mayo sandwich each, a large scone with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of cakes/macaroons too. It all arrived on a tiered stand and everything was very fresh and of good quality. In all honesty it was probably one of the best afternoon teas I've ever had: the setting of the cafe is beautiful, the service was attentive and friendly but not overbearing the manager even came for a chat when we'd finished, which was nice, everything was well timed, the food was delicious and a good amount, and the price is absolutely unbeatable. I came on here expecting to see more reviews similar to mine and was shocked to see some negative feedback. I can say for certain that we didn't experience anything that has been mentioned in these so I think they must have turned things around and made some improvements. It's well worth a visit and we're really looking forward to returning here in the future.
The place has had a bit of a much needed birthday! Great staff, great service, will almost certainly return!! Thank you.
