The Surprise is no surprise, perhaps the most leaked secret in Chelsea. However, the Surprise is none the worse for that! A lovely pub with a fine atmosphere. Good beer from the keg and the cask. There is also a decent menu with options for most. Service is brisk and friendly, what more could you ask for. A most enjoyable place for a beer.
Deceptive place this one, Nestled in the back whacks of Chelsea a 2 minute stroll from the kings road,What looks like just a local pub is actually much more than that, beautifully decorated with a great mixture of eclectic art, we sat upstairs in the lovely cosy dining room with about 35 covers, A great Selection on the Sunday Menu, Honey Mustard Sausage’s with mustard Mayo Excellent Then a choice of roast, I went for the beef perfectly cooked finished of with Sticky Toffee Pudding, As good as it gets A very extensive wine list and reasonably priced. Around £50 a head with a glass of wine, not pub prices but way above pub grub quality with superb service, would definitely recommend.
The Surprise, is a beautiful pub in a perfect location. From the outside it is adorned by elegant striped shades and wooden benches, perfect for a Sunday drink. Unfortunately the food was very disappointing. I had the Sunday lunch, roast beef, which was two slices of terribly overcooked, gray meat. I'm astonished how many great pubs can't do medium rare beef. i don't know why this is too much to ask. Rest was pretty ponderous, heavy potatoes, no hint of a crunch or a crisp, parsnip puree which was identical to wallpaper paste and I've forgetten what else was on the plate. A real shame. Nice service though. Plus I do hate when there are TVs on and noone wants to watch them, they just distract you.
It appears that everyone has found out about this little gem of a pub. This pub has the most amazing traditional setting, but everything about it oozes a bit of class. The drinks are great, well-kept beers, and I've been told a pretty impressive wine list. The food is exceptional, a little pricier than your average pub, but this is reflected in the quality.
Top quality food, very attentive service, great atmosphere. Say no more.
Cozy little restaurant/pub tucked away in a quiet part of the neighbourhood. Service was incredibly welcoming and the meal was absolutely delicious - we had the burger, the roast chicken, the duck leg terrine and mushroom soup. Everything was made to perfection, flavours were bang on. Great wine and beer selection too. We booked an early table and noticed that many tables were already reserved, so probably best to book a table in advance to ensure a spot.
It's a good pub but if you come from out of town it doesn't stand out. Very nice private dining room but we were moved out with no following sitting. Food ok but a little loaded with garlic and truffle.
£12 for a couple of mediocre virgin mary’s was definitely a surprise. Why they bother to sell beer or anything else at that kind of markup is beyond me.
Beautiful pub, nestled down a sidestreet. I was wandering around, wasting an hour before an appointment and found it entirely by accident. Stepped inside, ordered a pint and sat down. I was told I couldn't sit down at any of the empty tables because they were all booked. I was a bit bewildered. I've never walked in a pub in my life, ordered a drink and been told I can't sit down anywhere. My only option was to stand in the middle of the pub, in the thoroughfare and just sort of stand there. This isn't a pub so much as a restaurant so just keep that in mind.
Fantastic is all I can say. Possibly the freshest pint of ale I’ve had in a very long time! The fish and chips 10/10.
