Excellent lunch, very tasty gastropub food, friendly and timely service and a cosy atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended! We recently went for lunch at the Sun Inn for the first time in a couple of years. After a less than positive experience back then, I can confirm this place has improved hugely under new management and is now one of our top three places to go for lunch in and around Basingstoke. We had olives/warm bread and a prawn cocktail for starters. Very tasty, but the main courses of lamb and fish and chips were the stars. And the chocolate fondant for dessert! We'll be back soon!
Absolutely fantastic hosts and wonderful food. The staff made every effort to make us comfortable and couldn't rate them any higher. Service was quick and the food tasted lovely. Will definitely visit again when we're in the area. Thank you.
This was my first chance to try the Sun Inn since the new owners had taken over. I can't imagine how tough it must have been during the pandemic but based on the quality of food and service tonight, I'm assuming they practiced a lot behind closed doors. I cannot fault the quality of the food or service at all. This place deserves to be packed to the rafters but I don't think it'll be too long before this place is one of the areas top restaurants. I haven't had a streak this good since I moved back from Texas. Starters and mains were cooked to perfection.
Had a really enjoyable dinner here with an excellent steak and generous portions of sides - potatoes, onion rings, salad, tomato and mushroom. All well cooked. Peppercorn sauce was good too. The staff were very accommodating and attentive. It was a cosy with a nice ambience. I would definitely return.
Nice pub/restaurant, plenty of parking and Covid safety rules in place. Friendly and welcoming staff and although not busy on my visit, friendly locals too. Point of warning. If you park to the right front of the pub and are heading for Winchester and Salisbury... remember that you are on a duel carriageway!!! There is an opening for this manoeuvre, but this is further to the left of the entry. It could be very easy to find yourself driving against the traffic!!! Nice menu, very reasonable prices and bright and clean interior.
Another lovely dinning experience with family at The Sun Inn. Great customer service from the front of house team, always welcoming and accommodating. Good selection of dishes on the menu including several vegetarian and vegan options. Our menu choices were delicious, piping hot and nicely presented as always. We will be visiting again soon …. Such a disappointment. Our first and last visit under the new ownership. We arrived on time. One person serving at bar showing no interest in us. We had our dog allowed so had to sit in an empty annexe not one table set up. What was really incredible was the fact that there was a full blown birthday party taking place next to annexe and overflowing into annexe with children screaming and running around and an external door being opened and closed constantly as the party guests went out for a smoke or took a dog out. We could hardly hear ourselves. We should have left but my sister had brought our 96 year old aunt and we had nowhere else to go. We stayed, we eventually got served by the one other person serving. The food eventually came, nothing special, not “gastrofood” just pub food. We are the meal and left. Never going back. No apology from the manager, no understanding that if he had told us there was a party taking over the pub we would have found an alternative. He had called the previous evening to confirm the reservation! Lots to change and lots to learn. It really was a waste of hard earned money.
We were a party of eight, five adults three kids. We had the Sunday roast, two courses. I had the halloumi for starters, served on a huge salad! Delicious. My lamb was tender, couldn’t finish as there was so much food. Staff could not have been more helpful. Will come again. Kid-friendliness: There is a kids play park which our kids made good use of. Dietary restrictions: They can provide Gluten free options!
We had a truly wonderful meal and it was such a shame we were the only ones but that added to making it feel special. Lovely fresh produce and really nicely cooked. I shall be back.
We went to the Sun Inn based on a previous experience by my partner a few years ago. It seems the establishment has changed hands in this time and gone down hill considerably. We ordered the lamb roast and salmon fillet and it was disappointing to say the least. The lamb roast consisted of only 2 slices of lamb and the veg was ok, but let down by the roast potatoes, as they were over cooked and hard. The Yorkshire pudding were clearly not fresh but from frozen and bizarrely came with the salmon meal. The staff were pretty non plussed and not particularly engaged. The menu itself was printed in red ink in a hard to read font, and confusingly it contained no prices on the first page and at bottom of the second page it mentioned the prices for 1, 2 or 3 courses. We believe this establishment is trading on its previous reputation, however it does not currently live up to it. The food is just above a Wetherspoon's, but only just.
