Story

The Stewartry Museum was founded in 1879, and first occupied part of the Kirkcudbright Town Hall. As the collection grew, the present purposebuilt museum was planned and opened in 1893. The museum has an old-world charm and exhibits a wealth of objects relating to the area known as The Stewartry or Kirkcudbrightshire (the eastern half of Galloway). Research Facilities The Stewartry Museum holds an impressive local history library and archive collection relating to the Stewartry and an extensive photographic archive. All of these resources can be accessed when visiting the museum. Prints of the photographic archive can be supplied, for those unable to visit the museum in person a postal research service is also available for a small fee. The Stewartry Museum opening hours vary throughout the year. Winter opening hours Monday - Saturday 11am - 4pm

A well presented local history museum with s varied selection of artifacts. Well worth a visit if in the local area.
The stewartary museum was an interesting free museum. It contains a varied collection of history items from fossils to taxidermy. Myself and my wife enjoyed it. I would give an hour for it. No toilets and only the down stairs section would be wheel chair available.Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Excellent museum about the local history of Kirkcudbright and surrounding areas. The main exhibition displays items that showcases life in the area throughout recent history. The upper gallery has a large collection of animal taxidermy. Free admissions and no car park but plenty of on-street parking nearby.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A fantastic little museum in the middle of the lovely town of Kirkcudbright. Packed with local artifacts from thousands of years ago to fairly recent times. Such a wide range of items to interest everyone and good for family's. As a local myself I learned about items and events I never knew about but would say that this museum would be fun for people from afar. Donations are kindly welcomed and a visit here is well worth that!

Small scale, local museum definitely worth visiting. Artifacts from all walks off life from historic, animals, local organisations, wartime and lots more. Free to enter, small donations welcome. Kids competitions to keep them involved. Not too far from main town car parks or street parking.
Superb little museum, with many artefacts worthy of national collections, especially prehistoric, Roman and early medieval. All beautifully preserved in a building that is a treasure in itself. Great credit to the volunteers and others who have reopened the museum
Lovely little museam full of local treasure and historical artifacts. Also has a floor dedicated to stuffed animals! Free entry but had to book in advance for a timed 1 hour visit. Sept 2021
