Sadly I had hoped to be posting a glowing review of the Starr extolling its great food, wonderful atmosphere and impeccable service. Family members visiting recently had told us how good the food was. Unfortunately our experience was an exercise in patience and perseverance. The revamped bar at the entrance looked great. A small space reworked into a festive space a London Bar would have been proud of. The overworked barman did his best to create his magic and our drinks were tasty. Having told the restaurant staff we were there. We were ushered into a busy if noisey restaurant. The busy patrons having to talk loudly over the live singer. She was doing her best to entertain its guests. We gave our order to a gentleman i think was the restaurant manager but as he never introduced himself I couldn't tell you for sure. We ordered 2 starters to share followed by 3 main courses. It was obvious that the restaurant was busy which at a time when restaurants are struggling was great to see. But having waited 30mins for some foccacia not home made foccacia as described in the menu but ordinarily sliced bread and oil with a charcuterie board which consisted of a few sparce meats and 2 token olives I should have realised we were in for a long, long ,long wait. After waiting for an hour without anyone checking in with us we were forced to get up and go to the bar ourselves to order some more drinks. After almost 2 hours of waiting without any contact from the staff I through in the towel and went to find the man who served us to ask for the bill. Tired, bored and hungry we just wanted to go home. A short while later we were told our food was coming. It was clear they had forgotten about us. Noone was properly overseeing the restaurant and non of the staff came over to talk to us despite sitting for 2 hours without any food. Tables emptied around us the busy restaurant winding up for what felt like the end of the evening. They waived the bill and we sloped of home hungry and bitterly disappointed. So desperate to fill their tables despite inadequate staffing they forgot the basic tenant of a good restaurant. The food must be good but excellent service will always overcome long delays. Most people will forgive long waits if they are regularly updated and extra drinks offered. Honestly about delays will usually be met with thanks and acceptance but tonight was truly awful.nnThe manager did try to apologise if he was the manager as I mentioned he never introduced himself but by then it was too little too late. A sad indictment of why so many restaurants fail.
First time visiting this place for Sunday lunch and as a vegetarian was unfortunately told that option was not available, however the chef was more than happy to make a risotto which was absolutely delicious!nnFood was served in good time, my other half had the 3 meat roast and the Yorkshire pudding were fresh made and not pre frozen.nnLovely service. Lovely food. Lovely atmosphere
Absolutely lovely experience. Definitely the best place to eat out in dunmow. We were blown away. Great service. Great ambiance. There was a live singer that was fantastic throughout the evening. We thought she was a recorded album at first and then noticed her walking around with a microphone! The food was delicious. We got wings and asparagus. The lamb and duck. And the sticky toffee pudding and brownie. All of which were top notch . 5 stars.
I would like to say that this restaurant is very underrated - we were the only ones there, but I was absolutely delighted with the combination of products provided by the chef Martin.nI would also like to mention the excellent service of the waiter Jack, who provided us with excellent service with recommendations.nnIf you still take a chance and order a salad with avocado and veal liver with horseradish - you will be absolutely delighted with the skill of the chef.nnI apologize for the lack of photos, as we did not have time to take them. We were completely absorbed in the experience of the food, it was simply unforgettable.nnWe will be back to try the main dishes from this restaurant.
Seen some strange reviews. But personal experience is that the food is fantastic. Best fillet steak I’ve had in years. Service a bit slow but it was very busy due to Dunmow Market night. Service is usually good also. Only had mains which was plenty. £45 per head for the 6 of us with drinks Lobster & 10 oz Fillet Steak great value for money. Female Singer was Fab.
