Story

The Stags Head is situated in the pretty village of Great Doddington in Northamptonshire, only 2 miles from Wellingborough and 8 miles from Northampton.

The Stags Head is a large stunning stone built building, with a high beamed traditional restaurant, a cosy cellar bar, large lounge, and a separate bar area, with large flat screen tv, pool table and leather sofas, which leads through to the fairy lit enclosed garden, with a pretty heated smoking area.

This is the second time we’ve been to The Stag’s Head and both times we have been delighted by the soup - amazing, possibly the best I have ever tasted. Today’s was cheese and caramelised onion, fabulous! The main courses were great, generous portions without being over the top, beautifully cooked roasts (I had the turkey and our friends had lamb and beef whilst my husband (who considers himself a connoisseur) raved about the steak pudding. The dessert menu is limited, although our friends enjoyed the trifle, I didn’t want too much as I had eaten very well already but wanted something sweet to complete the meal. I chose the ice-cream, such a disappointment. It was hard and tasteless and really let down the high quality of the rest of the meal. The vanilla was described on the menu as ‘creamy’, sadly it wasn’t. I really urge the manager or chef (whoever makes these decisions) to seriously upgrade the quality of the ice-cream - it presented as a cheap own brand from a wholesalers, a real let down. The waiting staff are all lovely and work incredibly hard, the restaurant is attractive and inviting - our American visitors LOVED the place - but PLEASE, spend a bit more on your ice-cream!

Great pub with lovely food. Took my family there with my father who is in a wheel chair. Was no issues although the entrance was a bit title with the inner door. They sorted us for seats and food and drink were really good. So much my father asked to go there again when he next visits. Which he never has done before. Would suggest booking for Sunday lunch as it does get busy.

After hearing very good things regarding your pub and restaurant I decided to book a table to treat my mum,wife and mother in law for mother’s day .on arrival we were made to feel welcome and waitress took food order and all was going great ........after a small delay we got to our table ,the starter was delicious and had no complaints .........we then all received our mains and I hAve to say we were all disgusted by what we were served ..........the waitress bought the plates out holding a towel when really she didn’t need it as the plate was stone cold and the food was not much better........you couldn’t identify the small amount of veg you got except for the burnt piece of onion ......the portion was not fit for a rabbit let alone 4/5 grown adults .........the Yorkshire was either rubbery or rock solid and the gravy Luke warm .......to have to pay £28 a head for processed cold Tiny portions I think is an absolute disgrace .........I for one will not be returning and when asked by Friends how it was I will be not holding back ............having had the day centred around treating my family to a lovely meal I’m nothing short of disappointed and angry at the overall experience .including how our complaints were dealt with at the time .........

We were a party of 12 and the service was admirable and the staff very pleasant. The food was excellent.

Had an excellent meal. In a cosy setting with nice atmosphere. It was to celebrate my partners 60th birthday. Only complaint, my partners cheese board was very sparse and the cost of dessert was a little high.
