I had a mosey on down to Croydon to sample some of it's watering holes and first up is the The Spread Eagle which is a fabulous former bank building. As you can see from the picture it's a behemoth of a boozer and they don't waste the space at all. Upstairs is a theatre where they hosts regular comedy nights and the downstairs is a big old booze emporium which is run by Fullers and they know a few things about pubs. If you’re after a large pub that pulls no punches this is one for you.
A total disappointment. Very slow service, waited around 45 minutes for food, not receiving appetizers before main courses. Fish and chips was great, but the Sunday roast was a real disappointment. The meat and the Yorkshire pudding were dry, the vegetables were reheated, just the potatoes were good. No discount was made no matter we said the dish was not good. Never order the bread selection, it is just some pieces of bread with old butter and some olive oil and vinegar sauce. Will never come back and will never recommend this place at all.
Ordered food Twice here the first time was pretty good but later on the food was not as well cooked as before. Good selection of drinks and the staff were friendly and helpful. I stayed to watch the football game and there were enough screens plus if you get to sit on the sofa that's very comfortable.
Classic British pub, good selection of beer on draught and good Sunday roasts.
Unfortunately has gone downhill recently in terms of food. Used to have a lovely pie selection and good veggie range but now no pies to be found and only one sub-par veggie burger as a main. Clinging on to three stars due to their decent ale selection, good atmosphere and lovely staff.
Firstly I have to say the young Polish lady that served us was really nice and very attentive unfortunately what let the experience down was the food. There was 7 of us all together and no one was happy with there food. Personally I ordered haddock and chips, the chips were nearly cold and the haddock was definitely of very poor quality, for what it cost I was very disappointed, the only thing was good was the dessert. We will not being going back there again and also I wouldn't recommend to anyone who's thinking of going in there for something to eat.
A traditional pub in the heart of Croydon with high ceilings and a beautifully carved wooden bar. It felt welcoming and cosy as soon as I stepped through the door and I found they have a good range of beers from the Fullers and wider Asahi group Fullers, Dark Star etc. There are a few big screens around the place to show sport but it doesn't feel overbearing or detract from the vibe.
It saddens me to write this review because I have loved this pub in the past. But a Pie and Ale pub that no longer has pies on the menu is quite disappointing, even when there are pictures of them on their website. When trying the new pie-less menu, a number of items were unavailable. We order the beer burger and we’re very underwhelmed and average also there was a hair in the fries. Such a shame because it was a great pub, hopefully it can get back there. Bring back the pies! Luckily it still has a good range of beers and spirits.
Love this place, very regal, wonderful decor and great team. Can be hard to get any attention on Friday nights. As I don't really drink not a problem for me! Food is great : The decoration and ambience is great, definitely one of the most upmarket venues in Croydon. They do pay attention to the little things and the pies are great. The food menu and items are brilliant. It's really good traditional English food.
Only poped in for a quick pint. Very elegant-looking pub. I'll try the food next time. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
