General Information

Story

Licencee
Quietely made his mark with a consistency of product and service. Danny and Liz McGeehan took the pub over in May 2005 and have now intrduced their own character and experience to the Saye & Sele. Danny was Head Chef at the affectionally known “The Mink & Jag” Westgate Arms Hotel in Warwick with Liz at front of house. Danny then became Executive Chef at the Bear hotel in Woodstock, Worked in Germany and at the 5 star Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth. Had a business manufacturing fresh desserts commercially and most recently looked after the catering department at Chipping Norton Golf Club for just over 9 years.

The Building
Part of the historic Broughton Castle estate, the ancestral home of Lord & Lady Saye & Sele. Built around the 1300 and was first licenced in 1782.The hallway has a wealth of photographs showing the pub in its thatched glory with a well in the back garden and a rolling grass hillock down to the front of the pub which is now the neatly tarmacaddam car park.

The Restaurant
Seats 32, and is adorned with a large collection of old sewing machines, hanging ornate water jugs and a painting of Thomas, the 13th Lord Saye & Sele (1735-1788)

The Bar
Has an abundance of well polished old flagstones and a carpeted area with a total seating capacity of 40. The low ceiling and original beams with a sparkling array of horse brasses give the bar a warm and welcoming feel. The new bar and cellar managers Kelvin Stanford & Holly Allsop add a friendly and professional touch with his genuine enthusiasm and knowledge of the real ales on offer. The Saye & Sele Arms recently achieved the highest possible marks from the independent assessors Cask Marque for the well kept cellar and quality of the beers. Free of tie from any breweries or pub co's enables wide access to a large choice of real ales, lagers, ciders, wines etc.

Food
Consistency is Danny’s keyword so that customers know what to expect from the kitchen on repeated visits to the Saye & Sele. From the menu comes a variety of old favourites such as lambs liver with smoked back bacon on creamy mash or slow braised steak in red wine with roasted vegetables. The Saye & Sele is very proud of the proper pies that are all amply filled with short-crust pastry( all round, not just on the top) :- Lamb and apricot, Beefsteak kidney and Guiness, Chicken bacon mushroom and tarragon, Pork with sage and red onion, minced beef Cheddar and Stilton to name but a few. The A l a carte menu has something for everyone with special consideration towards those requiring gluten free and vegetarian dishes. Desserts are all made on the premises with the exception of ice creams. The souffled bread and butter pudding a recipe that Danny has perfected is definately not to be missed. Local suppliers are used as much as possible to ensure the expected freshness and quality.

Sunday Lunch
Classical roasts appear on the menu every Sunday, Topside of Beef, Leg of Lamb. Herb crusted Loin of Pork, supreme of chicken with smoked bacon. At least seven starters, main and dessert courses are available @ £16.95 for 2 courses and £18.95 for 3 courses. There are 2 sittings on Sundays 12 for 12.30 and 2 for 2.30 and bookings are strongly advised as both the restaurant and bar fills up very quickly.

The Garden
Enclosed by stone walling and neat fencing with a backdrop of mature trees, well stocked old English borders and even a potted herb area. Seating for 50 plus on the paved patio or the lawn is available for dining al fresco when the English weather obliges. The newly erected pergola, we are sure will create a stampede to the garden by our regulars and for the smokers amongst our guests an area of our patio is being covered Hopefully byEaster 2010.

The pub also has a very well looked after Aunt Sally area for the Oxfordshire unique game. The pub is adorned with 18 beautiful hanging baskets and troughs during the summer which gives the pub a very eye catching and welcoming appeal.

Parties
Danny and Liz welcome all enquiries for parties up to 32 and will discus personal menus to suit ensuring guests are fully satisfied and confident without anxiety.

The pub is also available for Private FUNCTIONS on SUNDAY EVENINGS

Children
Very welcome if well behaved in the pub but only for dining purposes when accompanied by an adult.

Good beer and excellent food. However I think since our last visit a couple of years ago the portion size has shrunk. Or maybe I was just hungry..However it's still great. Thank you for looking after us.

Visited on a Saturday lunchtime. Weather sunny. We were greeted warmly by the landlord. The place was almost deserted. We ordered drinks and sat outside in the garden. Later we ordered some food which was very nice. We would definitely recommend a visit. Nice walk afterwards to Broughton Castle.

Nice environment, good service and food was good. Only thing I would say is that a Ploughmans is cheese and ham not cheese or ham and just over £11 for one with both is a bit toppy considering the portion size so either increase the portion or drop your price a little.
