The Pig and Butcher

About

Welcome to the Pig and Butcher, Pub & Eating.
Pub: Craft beers, hand pulled ales, classic cocktails.
Eating: Meat straight from the farm - butchered, cured & smoked on site. Fish straight from the boat.

Story

The Pig and Butcher occupies a handsome pub built in the mid 1800's on what was fields used by farmers to rest and feed their livestock before being sent to Smithfield's Meat Market.

We have brought the pub back to it's roots and receive carcasses straight from the farm and butcher on site. We specialise in rare breeds such as White Park cattle, Iron Age pigs and Hebridean lamb while our good friend Seb at Chart Farm in Kent supplies our game - if you haven't tried his venison you are missing out!

In summer we grill over charcoal and wood on our specially built Robata grill. In winter we brine, cure, smoke and braise.

Vegetables come from Kent and are as good and fresh as anything you'll find in this country.

Our fish is supplied by Rupert from the south coast - he is the most passionate man we know when it comes to fish! He calls us in the morning and tells us what the day boats have caught and what he recommends.

We take our inspiration from farmhouse tables across Europe. Food is served simply and with little fuss! Share lots of small plates or a single big plate. We like the idea of bringing conversation back to the dining table and what better way to do it than sharing and stealing food?

Think of food as Granny used to make!

If it wasn’t for the ridiculously overpriced wine list and the fact that the overpriced white was served warm, 5 stars. Perfectly cooked scotch egg, nice runny yolk, though the outside was a bit over crisp. The scallop and black pudding was elegant and tasty. The crab gratin also wonderful. And the pork cheek with black pudding beautifully done. Friendly efficient service. Wish they allowed you to bring your own wine. Would happily pay corkage
3 of us turned up here on a Sunday with no booking on the off chance of getting a table. The lady at the door was friendly, warm and welcoming and found us a table for lunch, which we were very pleased with. The scotch egg was delicious and the Sunday roast was ok. My husband and mother in law opted for the lamb for 2 and I went for the beef. I found the potatoes a bit too dry. I had to ask for more gravy to be able to enjoy it. Overall, very attentive service, great atmosphere and a lovely venue.
All I have to say is WOW. What an amazing spot for Sunday roast. We had the sirloin and the pork belly and both were fantastic, as well as the cauliflower cheese. Suzi was an amazing server and Marketa’s hospitality truly makes this an exemplary place to spend an evening. The strawberry cheesecake was especially good as well. Can’t wait to come back again!
Really good Sunday roast and sticky toffee pudding. Some of the roast options are actually table sharing between 2-3 people just fyi like the lamb and chicken. We had pork and beef which were both nice, cooked properly.Food: 4/5
A nice but expensive meat restaurant with a warm atmosphere inside, the service has been improved since my first visit, in which I've found waiters/waitresses a bit unfriendly. You will need a reservation as they sent us away at the door. Also, definitely not a restaurant to come if you are vegetarian. All to food is very flavourful and meaty with matching wines. And do not bother ordering desserts, they are litterally two spoons, and those spoons are not tablespoons. Good for special occasions.
The Pig and Butcher is a prime example of a great gastropub. The food is delicious; you can come for the Sunday Roast or opt for lunch/dinner with their diverse and appealing À la Carte menu. On this occasion, we visited for the Sunday Roast, and it exceeded our expectations! The portions are generous, yet the quality of the food remains excellent. We also enjoyed some bread and butter and a scotch egg, which was the best I've had in a long time. The setting and decoration of the pub are charming; nothing too extravagant or fancy, yet it gives off a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.
A renowned gastropub known for its emphasis on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, especially meats. The menu features a variety of dishes, with highlights including their succulent Sunday roasts and inventive takes on British classics. The cozy yet stylish ambiance, coupled with attentive service, enhances the overall dining experience.
Not as good as I remember when we came here for a magnificent Sunday roast on a visit to London before the pandemic. This time it was a Friday and we just wanted a light lunch and a beer. The choice was not great and we had a misunderstanding over the service. In the end we weren't charged for the sourbread. There was only one choice each of ale and bitter. We would give it a second chance for the Sunday roast which everyone still says is very good.
Service was fine. It’s a really lovely building and interior - especially upstairs where it was quieter and cooler. Had a chicken roast dinner which I honestly wouldn’t recommend. The chicken was dry in the middle, the yorkie was way too crispy, parsnips were hard in the middle and had no flavour, potatoes nice and crispy but again no flavour to them. The portion of gravy was absolutely tiny to share between 2 people, but they did provide more free of charge. Bread with dripping starter was nice. £23 per head for the chicken roast was absolutely not worth it - wouldn’t recommend.
Probably the best Sunday Roast I have ever had been there already 3x times! Every time I think about it I can still feel the taste in my mouth. Especially I love the sharing platter, meat is lovely cooked, tender and juicy. Vegetable super fresh, crunchy and glazed. Potatoes are crispy and delicious-best I’ve ever had. Nice selection of wines. Everything was delicious. Even my English friends keep asking when will we be back again! It’s not easy as it gets booked out so make sure you make reservations in advance like 2-3 weeks especially for groups over 4. Ambience is nice, clean and rather modern. Staff is polite but not over the top, just what you need. Highly recommend it. Kid-friendliness: Lots of families and space for a pram. Wheelchair accessibility: Ground level
