Wonderfully cosy pub that was packed with diners and drinkers on a Friday night. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating plus a few stools at the bar where there's also a telly. Nice range of lager and bitter at around the £5 mark per pint. Some bar snacks sausage rolls and lamb mini-pasties were on the bar for £2 each. The bar staff were busy but the waiting time was short. Card and cash accepted.
Went for a special night out and enjoyed the delicious food. The staff were great - a sign was out warning that they were short staffed and lots of new staff but they were doing a great job and we were well looked after. Bit noisy, but it's a pub so fair enough. Good choice of beers on tap and draught. Everything on our plates was delicious. Would recommend.
Went to this restaurant for a family dinner and didn’t regret it! The place is very cozy and reminds a medieval tavern with wooden tables and ceilings and very welcoming staff + a tray of mince pies right in front of the entrance. Our waiter was very cheerful, friendly and prompt and the dishes were AMAZING!! Home made focaccia was my personal highlight followed, of course, by the outstanding lamb…! You just have to order it when you visit this place. Overall, would definitely like to visit this wonderful gem of a restaurant again
We had the whole lamb shoulder. It was delicious, something really special. This plus the pie fed a table of 7. We were all full and thoroughly enjoyed. I marked down one star because it took a while for drinks to come each round. They were busy. Definitely going back.
What a fun place! Great atmosphere, great food, great people. We were in the UK on our honeymoon, and these crazy folks worked with our crazy family on the phone, while we ate to cover our meal, including a glass of fizz and sticky toffee pudding as a surprise. This was the only meal we planned in advance, and it was worth it. Thanks for a great night!
When I searched for recommended spots for Sunday Roast, The Magdalen Arms popped up but we didn't have a chance to try since they only serve it on Sunday. The decor is authentic, classic and wide-spaced with lots of both indoor & outdoor seating. However, it's super popular in the neighborhood and we were lucky to get the last table for 2, We visited right after they opened at 12pm. so reservation is recommended. Their menu is a little different by each day. We had the Burratina & Figs and Saturday Special Roasted Lamb with pickles & baked potatoes. The food was amazingly delicious, especially the lamb, which was well-braised & tender and the portion was more than enough that we couldn’t even finish it all. Our only complaint would be the imperfect service. The staff told us the wait for the lamb was about 30 min, but it actually took us more than 1 hour to get our order. We wouldn’t recommend tourists like us to visit since it’s kind of far from the center of Oxford.
Fantastic wine list and delicious menu using locally sourced produce. The Magdalen Arms has a charming, rustic atmosphere, with interesting interior details throughout. The basque cheesecake is highly recommended. Will not disappoint!
Atmosphere was warm and friendly but the food was mediocre. I dined on a Friday evening before the pub got busy. It took 40 mins for my steak which was not done per my request to be served. The chips were undercooked and tasted like old oil.
The food is amazing especially the seven hours lamb shared by multiple people. A whole lamb shoulder in a big plate.Food: 5/5
This is our local and we go there often as a family. It used to be one of our favourite places but lately there seems to something wrong - the food is still good but the service is astonishingly poor. We went to dinner last week at a friend’s invitation - we recommended the place but won’t do so again. We asked to book early because our five year old goes to bed by 8.30. We were told the kitchen opened at 6 so we booked for 6. We ordered our son’s food first - their staple homemade pasta with cream and Parmesan. That arrived quickly and was delicious. So far so good. We ordered the rest of the food for 5 adults around 6.45. Our starters arrived soon after and was cleared away soon after 7, but an hour later, by 8 pm the main course had not arrived. Our son was tired and wanted to go home. I went to ask and was told the food would arrive in “7” minutes. My husband left without his dinner and took our son home. When the mains finally arrived, closer to 8.15 than the belated ‘7’ minutes, it was very good indeed, but I had to rush through my dinner and take my husband’s dinner home with me. The young waitress was pleasant and helpful and packed up the food for us, but there was no apology or regret shown by the management - or the lady who seemed in charge, no one kept us informed or explained why the food took so long. Or seemed concerned that a child was falling asleep at the table while the parents waited seemingly interminably for their food. We had ordered a special - perhaps that took longer to cook - but they could have explained that in advance if that was the case, or told us while we were waiting why it was taking so long. When we arrived there was one other family in the restaurant area. The tables quickly filled up after us and every one of the others was served their main courses before we were. The usual serving staff some of whom are the owners and their family seem to be away and perhaps that’s why the service is so poor. I hope it improves soon, I understand that there is a staff shortage and if someone in charge had bothered to come to us and apologise or even explain we would have understood. But they didn’t. We now tend to go to the Chester Arms, a little further but as good food, and at least for now, better service.
