Story

The Hidden Gem, or officially St Mary’s Catholic Church, is located on Mulberry Street in Manchester, England. It was first dedicated at the site in 1794 with devotion to St Mary, Our Lady of the Assumption. In 1835, the roof collapsed, was restored and now The Hidden Gem remains the oldest Catholic Church in Manchester. (The second in the City Centre was St Augustine's in Granby Row, afterwards moved to Chorlton on Medlock.)ReformationIn 1422, Henry V gave permission for a collegiate church dedicated to St Mary, the Virgin of Manchester. Papal confirmation was issued by Martin V in 1426. The church was dissolved during the reign of Edward VI, but was re-founded by Mary I. It subsequently passed out of papal control, and it is now the Manchester Cathedral of St Mary, St George and St Denys.End of Penal LawsThe Penal Laws proscribed the celebration of the Latin Rite. They were finally abolished by the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1829. Catholic families had existed in Manchester throughout the period and had met secretly in order to conduct services. In 1774, a small chapel had been set up in Rook Street dedicated to St Chad. The chapel serviced about 600 people coming from as far away as Bolton, Glossop and Macclesfield. In the following years, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution, Catholic families from Ireland were attracted to the cotton industry in Manchester. The chapel remained in use until it was destroyed by fire in 1846. St Chad’s relocated to its own purpose built church in Cheetham Hill.

A beautiful and active church with a parish community that is welcoming and warm. The church is the first ‘church’ built after the Reformation and carries on the nearly 2,000 year-old history of Christianity in Manchester to the present day. A unique smorgasbord of architectural style making it special. In terms of solemnity and reverence, the celebration of the Mass is striking and emotional. I love this church and the parish community it serves. It is a truly blessed church, faithful to the Lord’s calling and the rich expression of the Roman Catholic faith.
My love for this church is unmatched. It is quite difficult to describe what it means to me. However, it is literally hidden in the centre of town. Very discreet and convenient for Catholics in the area. The community is small and welcoming. The church has multiple groups including a young adults group from undergrad students to working young adults. Feel free to join any group that suits you, it will be worth your while.
Wonderful place to gain spiritual experience, with the beautiful main altar, and two sides altars. Tabernacle inside, mass service also confession available. I have seen today a Paris priest blessing people and children. Great! Way of the Cross in the modern version if you like. Lots of devotional articles and everybody will find something useful. Very friendly people serving and helping during visiting. And the best: in the middle of the town center, you can come to kneel and in silence pray to meet the loving God! Strongly recommended!
Stunning and well run church with a very good Sunday mass. Very calm atmosphere and helpful members. Has a store as well with bibles and other religious items for everyday prayers. Highly recommend a visit!
Wonderful, serene and peaceful atmosphere with the light scent of francincence allowing escape from the rat race outside. Beautiful choir at Sunday noon mass.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A beautiful church, such a welcoming community and a very nice parish priest. The music was superb, catering for all tastes, the liturgy is celebrated beautifully! The only downside if one could go so far is that the “stations of The Cross” as artistically pleasing as they may to some, do not fit with the stunning period architecture of the church. However, a beautiful oasis of peace and prayer in central Manchester. Also, a very well stocked repository/ gift store!
What a beautiful hidden gem. We have no pictures as there was a service which we were welcomed into, which in itself was a wonderful experience. It was St Monica's day and clearly was meant to be.Visited onWeekday
So hidden and so centre of. Manchester. People who born or lived in Manchester 10s of years ago haven't seen it and that's go with the name the hidden jem. Visited for the first time twice this month. The place amazing as have been so many churches but nothing like this. The atmosphere the beautiful painting the stain glass all wonderful. It is not a big church but beautiful one and worth the visit. Probably you need to navigate on foot from Deanshanger or townhall to get to it through a little passage if you come from the townhall to enjoy and discover the wonderful jem.
Such a beautiful, tranquil and peaceful place to be. Could spend the whole day here. I love the fact you have a piety stall at the back. I would definitely recommend people to visit this amazing church. Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
