Henry Moore Institute tends to be a professional art gallery, specialized in Sculpture art, which is more than a general gallery. For some people, the name "Henry Moore" may mislead them it is a museum to exhibit Henry Moore's work, but it is not. Rather, it is established by Henry Moore for the further development of sculpture art. Thus, it is a place for understanding and research of sculpture. On the first floor, it is normal exhibition for public. Worth a look, but feeling "don't understand", even reading explanation from the nearby notecards, is within expectation. Art needs your interpretation. What is special here is the research library and archives of Sculpture, on the second floor. It serves for the research purposes.
Having a museum with the name " Henry Moore" in it, with nothing by him, is a huge disappointment. Kinda misrepresentation. We went to the Max Ernst Museum recently, and it was excellent. Plenty of his stuff. Was Henry quite lazy? Look how many Picasso museums there are! OK, so this is HM "Institute", I now understand, but it's still disappointing. Especially as the art they do have is really terrible. Old paint trays scattered about. Insulting. The museum next door has a Moore out front and a nice Hepworth inside, although it's irritating in its own way.
No Henry Moore sculptures which was disappointing. Looked like someone had a clear out of their garage. Still I was inspired to produce my own artwork, I call it Kernel Morrisons Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I always find the Henry Moore Institute gallery a let down. The shows that they put on seem lacking. Such a grand building and yet the spaces seem bland and cheaply constructed. It seems most of the money has gone on the furniture and decor of the central front desk that feels more like a corporate waiting room than a place to get help. As you don’t want to interrupt the arty types gossiping behind the desk. All in all it feels more like a posh undertakers than a vibrant and friendly art gallery. Sorry to be so brutal but I have never felt a friendly atmosphere.
Small but interesting - they do have a good display on at the moment as well. I was a little out off though. I was asked to put a mask on, even though wearing my mask exception tag, I’ve had to stop wearing one as I’m incredibly heavily pregnant and keep having bad Braxton Hicks that I have to breath through. The staff member was ok about it but it made me very anxious and feel really guilty.
This library is a sculpture lovers dream. In all my years of going to Leeds I have always seen this place but never did I really explore what was to be. I am re thinking of adding sculptures to my private interests once again and wanted to see what it was all about. Thankfully not only do they have access t0 some great books/pamphlets etc. They also hold regular exhibitions. Although I am a classic man myself it's great to see the library offering variety. Will definitely be back again.
The exhibit was large with some great work to see. This could also be it's one flaw as it's focus seems to be around quanitity rather than quality. Nevertheless there are some real gems within the gallery that make it really worthwhile. There is also a really beautiful cafeteria nearby to get some nice food if you fancy a break. Very nice thing to do on a rainy day in Leeds
I feel like the current exhibition has been created purely to create a situation where I can be mocked for failing to understand it. And even my lack of understanding would be regarded as a success as its created something in me. Frankly I don't want to understand. Got talked into an afternoon of culture, so popped into this sculpture gallery. I was actually impressed with exhibitions on display, even if somewhat limited by the current pandemic. The staff are nice and informative and the gallery is quite a relaxing place too. Naturally, you have to provide your contact trace details, apply handgel and wear a face mask, but that did not affect the time I enjoyed here, definitely recommend this gallery. Parking for obvious reasons is an issue, but I found somewhere quite close and entry is free
Beautiful glass sculptures, shame there wasn't more as my 10yo son found them interesting too. Fun in the kaleidoscope workshop!
