Small but quaint little heritage railway, we went for the New Year's Special which was busy first thing, the museum has a few engines and some interesting mining info from the area, you're no longer allowed to climb into the engine cabs but I guess that's because of a abuse from visitors. Then you're out onto the platform. I can highly recommend taking the first train to Middleton Park, going for a good walk and then returning for a later train back. It's a nice day out! The car park is small but we parked in the retail park just across the roundabout as currently there's no parking restrictions there.
This in my living area, visit twice, first to look around as there small muesum, shop and cafe. Even bought few things. Do see that black stream train alot when go past as it display outside. And staffs maybe volunteers, it Oldest Working RAilway and surprice it can be around. Second time, I visit I use the train to Middleton Park.
Brought our 7 year old here for the Santa Express and he absolutely loved it! He got a little present off Santa and got to ride on the steam train, also had our picture taken with Santa in his grotto at the end which is a nice touch! Would highly recommend for families at Christmas time!!
Fantastic experience! loved every minute of it. The family popped here in Summer, We wondered through the sheds looking at the old steam trains and engineering equipment and then took the train from the sheds to the bottom of Middleton Park and back again. You can have a walk round Middleton park before returning as the train takes about 20minutes there and back again, The day we went they had a model railway show on which was brilliant for my little one to see. Will be going back. Parking is limited but we parked on a near by street.
Took our young grandson for a ride on the steam train, he loved it!
Went for the first time in years and it's great! Took outer little boy to see a steam train for the first time. All the volunteers are helpful and friendly, the displays are interesting and well labelled. The train ride is brilliant, you get to see the engine swap round at each end and the engineers are more than happy to explain what they're doing.
The venue was hosting a Model Railway event this weekend. Never visited before but often seen the trains from the motorway above. Price for 2 adults was £5.50 each opting not to take a ride on the steam train, which would have cost another £3 each. Although we decided against the ride, it is something we will definitely return for but with our 2 year old grandson, who being Thomas mad will adore this. The whole place, the trains, platforms, exhibits and the staff were absolutely fabulous.
I'm ashamed to admit that I have never visited this lovely museum and railway, and will certainly pay them a visit with our grandchildren on a regular basis. Dont be like me and ignore a little gem of a railway museum.
It s our second time going with our non verbal autistic toddler for the Christmas train. The staff goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome, decorations are so colourful and fun and so varied for my son who has sensory issues,he LOVES it . Thank you to all the staff , we will be back next year for sure!
Nice little train ride for santa, staff really friendly good experience enjoyed great price. Free parking.
