I visited Leeds City Museum today, and it was a truly enriching experience. I was particularly excited about the Roman section, which did not disappoint. The dramatic display in the centre was captivating and really brought the era to life. However, I did notice that not all the lights on the bottom floor were switched on, which made it a bit challenging to fully appreciate some of the exhibits. The special exhibition on death across cultures was fascinating. It explored how different societies honour their loved ones, and as a fan of the Day of the Dead, I found it especially poignant. It was intriguing to see the various rituals and customs from around the world, providing a deeper understanding of this universal experience. The section dedicated to Leeds was equally impressive, offering a great perspective on the city’s history and development. It was wonderful to connect the past with the present and gain insight into what makes Leeds unique. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, despite the lighting issues. Leeds City Museum is definitely worth exploring, especially if you have an interest in history and culture. I left feeling inspired and eager to learn more!
So my partner and I recently checked out Leeds City Museum, and it's a pretty cool spot right in the heart of the city. The best part is it's totally free! It's really good for a budget-friendly day out or just a quick museum date When we went, they had this exhibition called "Living with Death." Despite sounding a bit heavy, it was super interesting, but yeah, a tad on the somber side. The exhibit dove into death, dying, and bereavement, which sounds gloomy, but it was done in a really thoughtful way. It got us thinking about how death is just part of life's journey that it happens to everyone and no need to stress too much about it. It also emphasized the importance of honoring those who've passed on. Anyway, I'm not gonna spoil any good part, go check for yourself! This exhibit ends on 6 January 2025. Despite the somber theme, it wasn't all doom and gloom. They've got some awesome displays on Leeds history. And many taxidermy animals were displayed. But the whole museum had this way of making you appreciate life more. It's like it gave us a new perspective on making the most of our time here. The place is well laid out, easy to navigate, and the staff are REALLY helpful It's perfect for a few hours of wandering, learning, and escaping the hustle and bustle outside. Whether you're a history buff, culture vulture, or just looking for something different to do, Leeds City Museum is definitely worth a visit. Catch the "Living with Death" exhibit before it's too late!
Great experience. First time visiting, me and my toddler joined the Friday craft session and the lady running it was very friendly and helpful. She told me about the toddler play area upstairs which we didn’t even know was a thing, and it was incredible so we came back in the afternoon with a friend and her toddler. Overall I spent my entire day in the museum and we had a great time and will definitely be back. Much better than tiny totley in the library for little ones as there are no older children misusing the facilities and making it unsafe for littles. Plenty of space so we could look at the exhibits and allow our toddlers to have a little look around too without worrying about bothering anyone. All the staff we met were very helpful and friendly. Lots of interesting things to see and interactive bits around the whole museum. Only downside was the cafe, panini was overpriced for what it was and I waited twenty minutes for it to be heated and it was burnt when it arrived. But I will be sure to eat elsewhere on my next visit. Coffee and cake was fine however.
We visited the museum as a family and we all loved our visit. Plenty of things to see and learn. You’ll need a minimum of 2 hours to go through the museum. Finding a parking might be a bit difficult as would be the case on any city centre.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Spent a day in Leeds and decided to visit their museum. Expected an only spend a short while walking around as it was ‘free’ but ended up spending lots of time here. It’s spread over 3 floors and loads of detail which I spend lots of time running through. It helped I was on my own so didn’t feel rushed. The Living with Death exhibit was very moving, emotionally. Very well done and thought provoking. The lower ground floor was more interactive for the kids which would be good if you needed to kill some time with the little ones on a rainy day. I would recommend.
I am a bit surprised to see they have one mummy in hereunwrap, and the exhibition next to it is "Death" I enjoy the Death exhibition showing how different cultures treat Death and make me think a lot as well.
Attended a Candlelight Concert Rings and Dragons, music from LOTR and GOT at the Leeds City Museum. Fantastic evening. Music was wonderful and the event space was amazing. Only downsides were the bar placement and the chairs were a little uncomfortable.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
What a place...never been before...something for everyone...staff were fab...and its free...went for the Pianodrome event which was mind blowing ! THANK YOU
During half term the museum was still relatively calm, which is helpful for myself as an adult with sensory issues and anxiety. There are so many aspects to the museum meaning anyone will enjoy it here, and there is something for all ages, not directly aimed at children, which allows us older history lovers to get stuck in too! Overall, always a lovely experience at Leeds City, definitely will be visiting again soon.
Nice museum to visit, especially considering it's free of charge. Staff are kind and welcoming. A new and very emotive exhibition regarding Death was recently opened. It explores so many aspects of death and the culture around it. Likely to be upsetting to those who have experienced loss or sensitive to said themes and suicide. It does include a warning on entrance. Many aspects were interactive and they have many videos on to watch about stuff within the museum. Unfortunately, certain interactive parts of the museum didn't work but it didn't impact much. Can't wait to see the next exhibition.
