The Hawes Inn

Story

Queensferry, also called South Queensferry or simply "The Ferry", is a town to the west of Edinburgh, Scotland, traditionally a royal burgh of West Lothian. It lies some ten miles to the north-west of Edinburgh city centre, on the shore of the Firth of Forth between the Forth Bridge, Forth Road Bridge and the Queensferry Crossing. The prefix South serves to distinguish it from North Queensferry, on the opposite shore of the Forth. Both towns derive their name from the ferry service established by Queen Margaret in the 11th century, which continued to operate at the town until 1964, when the Road Bridge was opened. Its population at the 2011 census was 9,026 based on the 2010 definition of the locality.ToponymyThe Gaelic name Taobh a Deas Chas Chaolais means " Southern Side of Steep Strait". The name "Cas Chaolas" (Steep Strait) is older than the English name; it can be applied to either North or South Queensferry, or both. The queen referred to is Saint Margaret of Scotland who is believed to have established a ferry at this point for pilgrims on their way north to St Andrews. She died in 1093 and made her final journey by ferry to Dunfermline Abbey. Her son, David I of Scotland, awarded the ferry rights to the abbey.

The location Queensferry and the ambience are the best things about the inn. Inside, it feels like a spacious maze and is very cosy. The food wasn’t great, but its presentation was excellent.nnWe had fruit cocktail, carrot soup, fillet steak, and apple and raspberry crumble for dessert. The food and dessert were served hot, even the plates. Two waitresses served us—one helped us get in, while the other ignored us and wasn’t friendly.nnIn terms of accessibility, there is a ramp at one of the entrances. The toilets are upstairs, accessible via stairs. I wasn’t specifically looking for accessible toilets, so I’m not sure if they have any.
Visited Hawes Inn twice during our week long holiday to Scotland, the food is amazing, bit pricey but that's what you get when the food is divine, recommend this place to anyone, beautiful views and the atmosphere is relaxed, lovely staff very friendly
We had a great time. The view, the atmosphere, the food very original menu-items, the service. No negative experiences. Next time we would like to stay overnight as well!
I brought an American friend here for lunch, knowing she would like it!nnI had the halloumi skewers & feta salad which were excellent. Vegetarian option. She had the chicken pie which she referred to as being “ok” but not outstanding.nnThe setting is lovely and we walked along through the Main Street before returning back to the car.nnA great destination for visitors to Scotland as well as locals.
We popped in for lunch after completing a section of the John Muir way. Service was very friendly. Great choice of mains and tapas ‘bar snacks’. All of our choices were excellent. Would happily return.
