Had found this Grog & Gruel pub online and FB Messaged them months before. Replies are quick given the time difference. Made a booking for Christmas Eve dinner… something local pub like.nnGot there and it was not as busy even for Christmas Eve thot I might be; and it was really like a small local place to have a warm dinner. Nicely greeted and shown our reserved table for the party. Mostly a few couples or single locals having a bit of a quiet dinner or drink.nnWe ordered mostly from the Christmas menu, 2-course there was a 3-course option; it was about £15/pax.nnThe ginger turnip soup was a nice warm puree, felt like a local? starter to a Christmas dinner perhaps? Magner cider in the background completed the experience lol.nnMains arrived and we had the turkey with the works. Clearly pub food and not bad. Pretty fresh veggies and decently done.nThe cheese burger was a bit normal.nBut the beef and stout pie was good nThe top crust was flaky crispy and just nicely done. But too much carbs for me because I slurped up ALL the beef gravy that went so well with fries. This was the winner for the night.nDessert was a Christmas pudding with whiskey sauce… it was ok, although if it was local baked, would have been a great finishing.nnNonetheless, food was pretty decent for pub food level, a nice local experience, perhaps simple but really nice. Not the amazing die die must try, but perhaps more down-to-earth local.nnService was pretty good to me… from early FB messages to actual table service on Christmas Eve I think they work hard to keep things going on a very quiet night. Thanks for having us.nMerry Christmas and the best for the 2026.nnPlace was cosy friendly and we were the only obvious foreigners; yet felt comfortable.
We’ve been coming here for many years and have loved every minute of it which makes writing this review all the more disappointing. Sadly, we won’t be back.nnSince the new owners took over, the place has completely lost what made it special. An alehouse with no cask ales available is incredibly disappointing. The fantastic selection of local Scottish craft beers and wide range of whiskies that once set this bar apart have been replaced by standard, run-of-the-mill pub options. It no longer feels unique or true to its roots.nnThe food menu was equally disappointing all fried chicken, pizzas, and hotdogs, with not a single Scottish dish in sight. For a place that once celebrated local character, this feels like a real step backwards.nnWhat made this place truly special over the years was the staff. The banter, warmth, and welcoming atmosphere kept us coming back. Seeing none of the original team and experiencing a noticeable lack of engagement and social skills was genuinely sad.nnIt’s a real shame to see such an amazing place lose its identity. What was once a brilliant spot for a proper pint and great company now feels like just another generic pub.nnShame on the new owners for allowing such a once brilliant place to lose everything that made it special.
Absolutely delicious food!! Randomly came across it visiting Fort William... prices are extremely good value and food was absolutely gorgeous!! Highly recommend the Steak and ale PiennBeth who served us was lovely really chatty and couldnt be more helpful!!
Cracking pub meal great staff and excellent value for money! We had the nachos to start and steak pie and chips X2nHighly recommend nice hearty homemade cooked!
The food was mediocre at best. My fish and chips was a very thin piece of fish that was dry and over cooked. The hamburger was more similar to meatloaf in flavor and had very little moisture. The staff was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was a little sterile seemed like the wanted to capture the tourist market but with providing very little effort beyond putting an open sign.
