Booked The Grill Restaurant on-line. very easy to do and it was followed up by confirmation and dietary requirement texts. A nice touch. Didn't use the bar area but it looked nicely refurbished. The restaurant itself was very good. Refurbished to a very high standard following the devastating fire of July 2019. The food was top notch not like the bar style menu of old The staff were attentive and polite. I would thoroughly recommend the Rye Marsh Lamb, cooked to perfection and my wife would also recommend the fish stew. Well done to the owners who have had a rough ride rebuilding the business to this high standard.
So this review is for the bar only. I must say we have eaten in the new restaurant before and it was awesome. Great food and service. So Thank you. So why the issue with the bar? Well, I popped in on Saturday night. After waiting at a non busy bar for a while i was asked what i would like to drink. 'Two gin & tonics, Plymouth gin would be great' I said. A moody man poured the drinks into standard tall glasses, little ice and no garnish. Presented them to me with a tonic bottles on the side and said. "that's £24.50..." Now i have no problem paying for a drink and being charged a premium for it, if the drink is worth it and has been given some love and care. This was like a no effort drink, pub poured and the not worth the price the George are charging. I did complain and the bar man did then find a gin glasses and garnish etc. But not everyone would and it's just not right charging London prices if you can't deliver on the experience. Disappointing.
We had a wonderful stay at the George. We were given a free upgrade to a beautiful room with a big roll top bath. Chuck was incredibly accommodating and made the stay feel very personal. The rest of the team were really friendly and made the hotel feel homely. A lovely spot in a lovely town. Would 100% recommend. Lots of great options for breakfast. Eggs Royale was particularly nice. Thanks for a great weekend!
Lovely cosy room in a great, central location, with very friendly front of house staff. It was in a bit of a noisy spot within the hotel, but this did not detract from our stay. We didn't eat in the restaurant, but did have a couple of drinks in the bar. It was a quiet time of the evening so we were able to chat to the lady serving, who seemed knowledgeable about the drinks on offer.
Lovely hotel with comfy beds in well-appointed rooms we were across the courtyard from the main building. The staff are all extremely helpful and friendly, the food is good based on 2 breakfasts and a dinner for our group of 4, including a non meat eater and a gluten intolerant and the bar is well stocked. Perfect for short break in a charming location.
Huge thanks to the team at The George. Beautiful hotel with outstanding service. Chuck on reception was professional but very warm and friendly. Ana in the dining room was a ray of sunshine both mornings, nothing was too much trouble. Superb breakfast. Wonderful hospitality us obviously at the heart of everything they doRooms: 5/5
Beautiful hotel. Food was lovely etc. Although the service we received at dinner was very cold. No banter. Not a fan of wine on tap... bottles please and the hairdryer in the room was rubbish. But all in all a lovely stay.Rooms: 5/5
Arrived at 1.55 and asked in the Bar if we were too late for lunch. Answer was no and to head to restaurant where we would be seated. On arrival at restaurant Manager informed us we were too late, just had 6 tables arrive so we were too late the restaurant was at best half full. We were offered hummous in the bar area. We left and had a great lunch at the Standard Inn..great value and supper food.
Only came for dinner this time around. The ambience, noise level and food were great. The waiter service was decent but relatively cold and direct, I suppose that's fine. The only disappointment was the unattended front desk with a queue forming. It was confusing as to what to do - do we go into the dining area? Bar? Do we wait? How long? In any case, after being seated it was a good experience we've come to expect from the restaurant Didn't stay at the hotel this time
Wonderful weekend stay at The George. The staff were delightful all round, but especially in the restaurant. The French manager and his team were so lovely with our kids and an absolute delight. The hotel was so cosy and comfy and so many things to look at from an interior design point of view. Rye is bustling and fun too, all sorts of gastronomic delights. It was very spoiling! Thank you From two rejuvenated parents and their excitable kids x
