Northern hospitality at its best. The staff could not do enough for us. They really went the extra mile. We were having trouble getting a taxi to the next village for an event and the manager of the place gave us a lift. Can’t fault it. Lovely breakfast too. Our room was big, very country pub feel and right on the river. It’s an old Roman settlement so plenty to see, 2 pubs in the village.
Well where do I start. The location is fantastic and with first looks it looks like a really nice place. We went for Sunday dinner and the quality was really good but unfortunately we had our 2 year old daughter with us and they don't offer a child's menu or portions for her so we had to share what we had, also they don't offer drinks for a small child apart from drinks in glass containers. The waiter we had was very unsure what was on offer even though he had to ask many questions to management his answered we're all in the likes of he thinks so or I'm sure we done instead of a definitive answer so that was disappointing. The deserts were all chocolate based so not much choice there, the decorating on the inside even though it's been recently refurbished wasn't up to a high standard unfortunately and you could still see where damp had come through the walls. It could be an amazing place it more was spent on it and also more thought on the menu to the point they are still advertising Sunday carvery but don't offer it.
My husband and I went tonight Saturday 2nd March, for a meal, when we arrived a man was on his laptop, he eventually acknowledged us, handed us a menu and told us to sit where we liked and bartender would be over soon to take our order. After several minutes my husband went to bar to order drinks and asked if he would come to take food order, young man said “ I might “ he didn’t so my husband went back to bar to order, I did hear bartender say to someone there was a party in the ballroom and he was working there aswell. The food was good but service was atrocious, they obviously don’t take into account that one person can’t be in two places at same time, we certainly won’t be going back.
We popped into the George in April 23 and have been in love with the place ever since then, we have stayed there 5 times now and travel all the way from Washington to be there, we just love the old historical building, the river garden and not to mention the outstanding food and service they also do an amazing buffet breakfast. The blazing fires and amazing beer are second to none, forgot to mention we like it that much that we have booked our wedding there in 2025, keep up the good work.
Rooms are large, huge bed, bedding is decent quality. The shower was large and reasonably powerful. Service at the bar was slower than expected but it was busy.Rooms: 4/5
I've stayed here about 5 times over the past year and every time I have stayed it's been very good UNTIL last night and this morning, I booked in for one night , got my room key/card went to my room 105 thought " it's been a very long day I'll go for a shower, shower head was very poor, water was spraying out of every joint and split other than the nozzles, tried to adjust the head, great on mist or massage but normal shower , shower head says " no" , so thought o I'll tell the staff in the morning as I've had my wetness now Climbed in bed by 9pm been up since 3.30 am but couldn't get to sleep due to the music in the bar below and what felt like two or three guys talking in my room but they where in the room below eventually I went off only to wake up around 1.30 am to be hanging out of the bottom of the single bed, I thought wow I must not be use to single beds shifted up and feel asleep till 3am upon I awoke and yet again my legs where hanging off the bottom of the bed , not again I thought so I got up used the toilet and on my way back to bed I noticed the bed was slanted down towards the bottom of the bed I lifted the mattress to discover no support whatsoever except cloth from half way down the bed and the mattress was sinking into the bed base, I checked the other bed to find exactly the same so in all a rough night's sleep. Went for breakfast at 7am to be told hot breakfast isn't served until 7.30 only continental from 7am I wasn't the only guest who's been told otherwise, a party of 3 and another single told cooked breakfast at 7am. So I then proceeded to pay and order my breakfast only to be charged £15.95 for one cooked breakfast, I questioned the lady about how steep the price was to be told "o these are the new prices" I waited 30 mins for the food and it wasn't anything like what I'm used to at the George. I was never asked what I would like on it or how I would like it cooked etc .Egg was over cooked, bacon cremated, beans were dry on the top and the hash brown looked like it had been cooked for a second time. Pictures to prove it I just had to leave . Patience was at its worst.
Took my family to stay here for 3 nights in the Cottage , first impressions were that it was a lovely location, nice and quiet and our cottage with hot tub over looking the river , room was well equipped with two nice sized smart tvs and free WiFi , lovely decor and king sized bed , our girls had the lounge area with a sofa bed which was comfortable for them and 70 inch smart tv for moves ect , we had breakfast and our evening meals in the George which offers a nice selection of continental and cooked breakfasts , and plenty of pub meals, my only disappointment was there was no steak , wasn’t an issue as we had burgers , pizzas from there pizza ovens and a beautiful fish and chips , there area of piercebridge is rich in history which is just a walk away and in the summer I imagine it would be lovely , lots to do in the local area all within a nice radius with a short drives away , our evenings were mostly spent relaxing in the hot tub once the girls had gone to bed or getting some room service, staff were amazing and super friendly to cater to our needs , would 100% recommend this place to any family or couple looking for a nice break away , will definitely hope to go back here soon Rooms: The cottage is amazing, perfect for a quiet getaway
Could not have asked for more, great service and great value. Our room was clean, the bed comfy and with all we needed for our overnight stay, including tea, coffee and water, bathroom miniature’s. We had breakfast included which was excellent quality. The staff were friendly and helpful and honestly I could not fault it. If I was in the area again I wouldn’t hesitate in stopping .
A 16th century coaching house set next to the River Tees and short walking distance from the Roman fort and bridge. The inn is loaded with history and the inside reflects this with beams on the ceiling, steps outside that lead to nowhere, the infamous grandfather clock and a huge ballroom at one end. The bedroom was the largest we've ever stayed in, although parts were showing it's age which is to be expected with such a historical building, it offered everything we could want, iron and ironing board in the cupboard, stands to put your suitcase on, a large walk in shower with complimentary shampoo, conditioner and bodywash, and most importantly tea and coffee making facilities. We had an evening meal in the bar area and the food was really good homemade sausage & mash, the staff were friendly and attentive and made you feel at home. There was plenty of parking either across the road or in front of the inn itself. Our bedroom overlooked the road and was surprisingly quiet, but seeing as the walls are really thick and the windows had secondary glazing it wasn't surprising it was quiet. I would like to mention that if you're after looking for things that go bump in the night, be prepared.... I spoke to the Manager who said go have a look in the ballroom, so off me and the wife go, it's dimly lit and the ballroom is pitch black, so as i walk up to the glass doors they suddenly open! Talk about jump, i nearly lost the small cup of milk i was carrying!! There stood one of the bar staff, she'd just been to collect something and was on her way back to the bar... So now i had her and my wife laughing their heads off and me suffering a mild heart attack... Anyways we had a great couple of nights and we will be back again
The George hotel has seen far better days. The photos on the website don't portray HOW the hotel is today. The room was filthy Under the bed there were numerous items including tablets and rubbish by far the worst item found was a pair of dirty pants The manager did move us to an alternative room. In summing up I feel the whole hotel requires investment and a deep clean. Rooms: Our first room was filthy
