The British Museum

Story

The British Museum Reading Room, situated in the centre of the Great Court of the British Museum, used to be the main reading room of the British Library. In 1997, this function moved to the new British Library building at St Pancras, London, but the Reading Room remains in its original form at the British Museum.Designed by Sydney Smirke and opened in 1857, the Reading Room was in continual use until its temporary closure for renovation in 1997. It was reopened in 2000, and from 2007 to 2014 it was used to stage temporary exhibitions. It has since been closed while its future use remains under discussion.HistoryConstruction and designIn the early 1850s the museum library was in need of a larger reading room and the then-Keeper of Printed Books, Antonio Panizzi, following an earlier competition idea by William Hosking, came up with the thought of a round room in the central courtyard. The building was designed by Sydney Smirke and was constructed between 1854 and 1857. The building used cast iron, concrete, glass and the latest technology in ventilation and heating. The dome, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, has a diameter of 42.6 metres but is not technically free standing: constructed in segments on cast iron, the ceiling is suspended and made out of papier-mâché. Book stacks built around the reading room were made of iron to take the huge weight and add fire protection. There were forty kilometres of shelving in the stacks prior to the library's relocation to the new site.

It’s great if you’re visiting London because they don’t charge you for entrance fees, so all the British museums are free thank you there’s lots to and do the greatest dinosaur collection. They have a mineral collection and you just walk around. You could be there all day. It’s right in the half of London, easy in and out doesn’t matter how many people are there I really enjoyed it the dinosaur collection it’s overwhelmingly fantastic.
One of my favourite places in London!nI particularly love the Egyptian section but if you want to make most of the museum in time then make of list of things that you wish to see. During holidays it gets crowded so getting a reservation before will help. The museum is free for all but in peak season you can book reservations without cost.nIt is always wise to start with room 4 where you have Rosetta Stone and then move basis your preference. Next to 4 is Greek, Asian and Byzantine. Then one can go for Egyptian - this is one of the best in the world so will take time.nThe museum also has cafe , pizza place and shops where you can get souvenir.nI also recommend going through their display of books if you are into history.nIf you want to see a lot and spend time without rush then do not pair anything with British museum. It can take the whole day.nThe museum closes at 5.
Visiting the British Museum was an awe-inspiring experience. The collection is simply breathtaking — a fascinating journey through thousands of years of human history, art, and culture from all corners of the world. From the Rosetta Stone to the Parthenon sculptures, every gallery holds something truly remarkable.nnThe museum itself is beautifully designed, and the atmosphere invites you to explore, reflect, and learn. It’s incredible how much knowledge and beauty is housed under one roof — and even more impressive that admission is free.nnWhether you're passionate about history or simply curious, the British Museum is a must-see. It's one of London’s greatest cultural treasures and an unforgettable place to visit.
I really love the British Museum because you can experience something powerful from all the world’s cultures and histories. The weather was beautiful during my visit, which made it even better. Sometimes it can get quite crowded, but I still enjoy being there. The fact that entry is free makes it even more worthwhile.
Everyone wants to visit the British museum and it’s free! So be ware of the long queue and be easy for long waiting!nnTickets - must be ordered in advance check them 2-3 days prior to the planned visit as there might be nonennBut if you happen to come without tickets - try the northern entrance and you may get in without a ticket.nnThe security will thoroughly check your belonging. They will take away a marker, a speaker and other - make sure you are not carrying the prohibited things.nnAllow enough time to see everything that you want as the museum is huge and you will definitely find another hour before the closing up your sleeve useful especially if you are a fan of good books: the shop of the British Museum is piled up with amazing books on history geography science and other. The shop itself can keep you busy for hours.nnIf you are taking kids with you make sure you set up a task before they run out of energy to perform useless observations. Tell them to find the biggest/oldest/smallest/darkest… object in every section and take a photo. Don’t forget to give them feedback on the job afterwards.nnThe building is huge and beautiful. Take time to enjoy the exterior.
