The British Museum

Story

The British Museum Reading Room, situated in the centre of the Great Court of the British Museum, used to be the main reading room of the British Library. In 1997, this function moved to the new British Library building at St Pancras, London, but the Reading Room remains in its original form at the British Museum.Designed by Sydney Smirke and opened in 1857, the Reading Room was in continual use until its temporary closure for renovation in 1997. It was reopened in 2000, and from 2007 to 2014 it was used to stage temporary exhibitions. It has since been closed while its future use remains under discussion.HistoryConstruction and designIn the early 1850s the museum library was in need of a larger reading room and the then-Keeper of Printed Books, Antonio Panizzi, following an earlier competition idea by William Hosking, came up with the thought of a round room in the central courtyard. The building was designed by Sydney Smirke and was constructed between 1854 and 1857. The building used cast iron, concrete, glass and the latest technology in ventilation and heating. The dome, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, has a diameter of 42.6 metres but is not technically free standing: constructed in segments on cast iron, the ceiling is suspended and made out of papier-mâché. Book stacks built around the reading room were made of iron to take the huge weight and add fire protection. There were forty kilometres of shelving in the stacks prior to the library's relocation to the new site.

It is wonderful and unique. I really enjoy spending time in this museum. First of all, it's free and allows you to enter as many times as you want without worrying about ticket fees. Second, it is very rich and many works from all over the world can be seen there. Finally, the division of the museum is really regular. I recommend visiting the temporary exhibitions, which are not free.
Simply impressive, first I thought nothing could surprise me anymore after visiting louvre museum. British museum might not be as large and grand as its counterpart in Paris, but it shines through with its unimaginable amount of timeless collection. Walking through British museum is like walking through the long history of mankind, from the stone age all the way to modern days.
Beautiful and large museum with fantastic statues! What interested me most was Egypt. But that was exactly what everyone liked. It was way too busy and then we went back out early. Tickets are free and can be reserved on the museum's website.
I had a fantastic visit to the British Museum with my kids and parents. It's an incredible place where you can explore cultures from all over the world—Europe, Africa, China, Egypt, and more—spanning thousands of years, even before Christ. The exhibits are well-presented, and there's so much to learn at every turn. My kids were fascinated by the Egyptian mummies and the Rosetta Stone, while my parents enjoyed seeing artifacts from different civilizations. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in history and culture! Highly recommend.
I arrived in mid-August 2024. When I got there at 9:30 AM, there was already a long line of people waiting. Everyone was polite and waited their turn, and after about 45 minutes, I was allowed in after passing security checks.nIf you want to enjoy afternoon tea during lunch, it’s best to make a reservation early by 12 PM, when I returned, all the spots were already taken until 3 PM.nThe museum is spacious and beautiful, and you really need the whole day to see everything properly. Since it was August, it was quite crowded, and some exhibition rooms were a bit hot.nI saw with my own eyes the statues that I had only seen in my school textbooks.nI was particularly impressed by the ancient Egyptian culture exhibition, and the pharaoh Buddha statues are very well preserved. I’ll definitely come back again in the future.
