Horniman Museum and Gardens

About

An inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free museum and gardens in South London’s Forest Hill.

Story

We’ve been open since Victorian times, when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, our collection has grown tenfold and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history collection.

Unusually for such an important museum, you can see our collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some of our objects.

Our visitors come time and again to explore our free museum, take part in our activities and enjoy our 16-acre gardens. And they discover something fascinating and mesmerising every time.

Lovely little museum in the Suburb of forest hill. Love stunning building and gardens outside which I'm sure will be packed during the summertime. The displays itself might seem a bit lackluster, but for a free museum I thought they where great. The taxidermy room is quite a bit too take in, and the aquarium (the only part you needed to pay for) while small, was great and had a really great selection of fish with in. It's fair to say this place is a bit more on the educational side and geared a bit more towards kids but for where it is, I really enjoyed my trip there.

Slightly disappointed. I'd heard so much about it and it may have been because a lot was closed off, but the exhibits in the main gallery were all a bit sad and in need of a clearer more dynamic presentation. I couldn't find any exciting curiosities - the Walrus though was rather splendid - at least nothing to compare with the Booth Museum in Hove. The Aquarium is, however, excellent and one of the most interesting and attractive I've ever seen. The musical instruments in the music gallery were remarkable in the range and diversity. I certainty enjoyed the Hornimans experience, but wouldn't hurry back. Most importantly, the children seemed to be having a great time and learning much. I would just add, that the display of various fossils from the different geological periods needs attention. There appeared to plenty of staff. They could be tasked with this work: cleaning the display cases and carefully dusting the exhibits.

Paid for the following:- The Aquarium - impressive but quit small. Not bad for the price. The Butterfly House - LOVED it. Despite not liking them too close to my face it was a great experience and I would definitely go again. It was also very HOT!

Very good family museum and not as busy as the other natural world-focused museums in London. The signs are descriptive and reads similar to a text book - which is both visual and informative for older children and adults as well. The gardens are a must - great view and nice and quiet. Only downside to both are the size as this is not the largest museum - so do not expect to spend more than two hours inside. However, it is free!

Beautiful museum building and gardens with views over south and central London. Some of the permanent exhibitions are free whilst others are relatively inexpensive. The natural world and musical instruments, in particular, are fascinating. The quality of some of the guest exhibitions varies and it would be great to see more interactive educational features there, but I guess it's possible to influence such things by becoming a friend. Will definitely be back.
