The Boatshed Restaurant

About

Situated with a view over Stornoway harbour, the Boatshed boasts fresh, local produce & is a master of seafood. The best taste of the sea in Stornoway!

Story

The best of fresh produce, prepared and creatively presented in the Boatshed Restaurant in Stornoway.

The Boatshed has enjoyed a great reputation for many years and is one of the most popular restaurants in Stornoway for local residents, as well as visiting guests. The cuisine draws on traditional Scottish dishes, adding influences from around the world, including eastern continents.

Great emphasis is placed on using the best fresh local produce available. Meat from traditional local butchers includes Lewis lamb, raised naturally on island crofts, while venison comes from local hunting estates. Fish and shellfish from the seas around the Outer Hebridean islands is landed within sight of the hotel. Local scallops are hand-dived and langoustines caught in creels – kinder than trawling and, we believe, providing a better taste.

Of course, providing cuisine of this quality means that we’re not offering the lowest prices in town, but most of our guests agree that dining at the Boatshed represents good value locally – and local residents keep returning for more.

The menu changes often, reflecting the seasons and the availability of produce, with every dish promising a special dining pleasure. For example, when a local fishing boat lands a monkfish, that might well appear on the evening’s special menu.

Decided to make a reservation the night before since I knew this was a popular spot. Otherwise, we would have eaten at the more casual cafe but I was glad we chose the main restaurant. We were staying in the hotel and it was very convenient. The front desk checked if we needed a reservation when we arrived.nnThis was my favorite meal of the trip. I decided to get the scallop black pudding appetizer with the langoustine main. The scallop app was phenomenal, and the garlic butter langoustine were excellent. The langoustine meat was delicate - tails were sliced open and I took awhile to crack open the claws to get most of the meat out. The elderflower cocktail was refreshing.nnI had been debating about having langoustine and scallop dishes for app or main. The waitress said the langoustine app has 3, main has 6. Scallop app and main both have 3 scallops, but main has fish also.nnGreat service overall. The restaurant was full and the larger parties really take their time here. The light is dim and everything was served elegantly. My vegetarian friend really enjoyed her bruschetta nibble and eggplant pasta. I would have ordered the cherry bakewell tart, but they were doing a different dessert.
This classy restaurant is located in Cromwell Street opposite Lews Palace. The food, service, staff, ambiance are all excellent. The lobster was, “absolutely yummy ,” and was demolished leaving very little behind. The duck was superb and the passion fruit curd cheesecake was heavenly. Staff were absolutely lovely. Couldn’t compliment this restaurant highly enough. Fabulous. Definitely recommend this place.
I'll start by saying we absolutely loved stornoway, it's truly amazing. We booked this restaurant as our holiday was coming to an end. My wife was desperate to try the seafood and was keen as were our travelling partners. After much debate my wife's cousin had paid for the meal and we all proceeded to leave. As I was viewing the local properties in a nearby estate agency, I could see the waiter running towards me? I had assumed one of us had forgotten an item of clothing but to my surprise he had questioned if we'd paid the bill? I was taken aback and replied of course, I even paid the tip to the manager. So I decided to go back in with him. I could see that there was some miscommunication and gave me a fairly vague excuse as to why the waiter didn't know what was happening. It was such a disappointment end to our holiday. The meal for 6 people wasn't cheap, and to think we would have skipped out on the meal was utterly ridiculous. The food was average and quite frankly overpriced considering the quality served. Not much more to say. This is my first negative review, but quite justifiable.
Sophisticated. A lovely retreat from the cares of the world. The Boatshed is a sophisticated hotel restaurant in a quiet historic hotel. The service was kind and calm and efficient and the food was excellent. We sat at a window seat and had a lovely view of the castle. I think my favorite thing was the peaceful atmosphere and quiet sophistication of the hotel and restaurant.
We had a lovely meal here for 2 adults and 3 kids age 12-15. The seafood was superb, really worth the money. There was enough diversity in the menu to satisfy everyone. My youngest had an enormous dish of pasta.
