The Boatshed Restaurant

About

Situated with a view over Stornoway harbour, the Boatshed boasts fresh, local produce & is a master of seafood. The best taste of the sea in Stornoway!

Story

The best of fresh produce, prepared and creatively presented in the Boatshed Restaurant in Stornoway.

The Boatshed has enjoyed a great reputation for many years and is one of the most popular restaurants in Stornoway for local residents, as well as visiting guests. The cuisine draws on traditional Scottish dishes, adding influences from around the world, including eastern continents.

Great emphasis is placed on using the best fresh local produce available. Meat from traditional local butchers includes Lewis lamb, raised naturally on island crofts, while venison comes from local hunting estates. Fish and shellfish from the seas around the Outer Hebridean islands is landed within sight of the hotel. Local scallops are hand-dived and langoustines caught in creels – kinder than trawling and, we believe, providing a better taste.

Of course, providing cuisine of this quality means that we’re not offering the lowest prices in town, but most of our guests agree that dining at the Boatshed represents good value locally – and local residents keep returning for more.

The menu changes often, reflecting the seasons and the availability of produce, with every dish promising a special dining pleasure. For example, when a local fishing boat lands a monkfish, that might well appear on the evening’s special menu.

We had a pleasant dinner and enjoyed our view with castle. My friend loved their vegan burger and I enjoyed the scallops and langoustines I had.nEnjoyed the musics and the staff was very welcoming.
After looking for seafood restaurants on the Isle of Lewis, the Boatshed was one of the three restaurants we wanted to try. It happened to be the only one with tables available for the next day a random Wednesday. Although within 36h slots went from almost all times available to fully booked. Everyone who came in during our visit who hadn’t booked, was turned away.nnUpon arrival we were seated quickly. The restaurant is lovely and the lighting is perfect. They have a standard menu and specials menu, although the specials are not rotating daily, as we were informed that the calamari listed, haven’t been caught in a while and therefore unavailable.nnWe got mussels and langoustines as our starters, the mussels were a huge portion, suitable as a main, the langoustines came as a set of 3. They had to be cracked by hand, but tools are provided and the staff are happy to advise you. We definitely recommend trying the meat in the claws as well. It was overall very delicious.nnFor our main we chose monkfish and scallops. The portion was generous, which is greatly appreciated for the price. The fish and the scallops were seared to perfection. The scallops were massive and so fresh that you could eat both parts, not just the usual meat section. The greens were juicy and the carrots sweet. We happily demolished everything.nnEven though we were rather full from the feast that was our starters and mains, we were tempted to share the chocolate fudge cake. It was perfectly moist and neither too sweet nor bland, which most chocolate fudge cakes tend to be. It was a proper indulgence.nnOverall fresh, delicious seafood and great desserts. Rather pricey but good value for your money. Portions are massive and they could benefit from a downsizing. A neighbouring table complained about the massive portions. We would have loved to try another dessert but that would have been too much.nnWe hope to return eventually, although this visit was towards the end of our stay on the Isle of Lewis.
Our food was incredible, and topped off with excellent service thanks to Angus who is just an absolute asset to the Boatshed.nThe only improvement would be the dessert menu, it could be a bit more creative, but I still enjoyed my sundae!
I had a wonderful dinner at the Boatshed after a long day touring the Isle of Harris. I started with the Harris Southsider and had an order of crusty bread, mussels in coconut milk, and the Seafood Pot. Each course was delicious and well-portioned. The sea food was fresh and wonderfully cooked.nThe restaurant has a nice ambiance and I enjoyed my seat by the window overlooking the harbor. The service was lovely and attentive.nIn case anyone gets the seafood pot and happens to have leftovers, I can attest that poaching eggs in the broth with some of that crusty bread makes an EXCELLENT breakfast for the next day. :
Fantastic seafood. All round lovely venue? Friendly staff and the best food. Totally worth it. Been there twice, a year apart and delicious each time.
