The Boatshed Restaurant

About

Situated with a view over Stornoway harbour, the Boatshed boasts fresh, local produce & is a master of seafood. The best taste of the sea in Stornoway!

Story

The best of fresh produce, prepared and creatively presented in the Boatshed Restaurant in Stornoway.

The Boatshed has enjoyed a great reputation for many years and is one of the most popular restaurants in Stornoway for local residents, as well as visiting guests. The cuisine draws on traditional Scottish dishes, adding influences from around the world, including eastern continents.

Great emphasis is placed on using the best fresh local produce available. Meat from traditional local butchers includes Lewis lamb, raised naturally on island crofts, while venison comes from local hunting estates. Fish and shellfish from the seas around the Outer Hebridean islands is landed within sight of the hotel. Local scallops are hand-dived and langoustines caught in creels – kinder than trawling and, we believe, providing a better taste.

Of course, providing cuisine of this quality means that we’re not offering the lowest prices in town, but most of our guests agree that dining at the Boatshed represents good value locally – and local residents keep returning for more.

The menu changes often, reflecting the seasons and the availability of produce, with every dish promising a special dining pleasure. For example, when a local fishing boat lands a monkfish, that might well appear on the evening’s special menu.

Good food but, at least for lunch, it was lacking atmosphere. We went in a Sunday as most spots on the island are close, and got the local mussels. The mussels were truly delicious & came with two generous slices of bread to dip in the tasty sauce, but the atmosphere and service were nothing special.
Lovely restaurant in Stornoway. We ordered mussels and seafood tom yum pot, serving portion and taste is good as well as the customer service. Generous dessert portion too, 1 order can definitely be shared by 2 person.nDefinitely well recommended.
Nicely presented good, but the cooking wasn’t up to the looks. My langoustine was watery boiled too long? and the salad hasn’t been spun dry and only had a hint of dressing.nnI asked the waiter for some oil, “olive oil” he asked. But when it came it was plain cooking oil in a fancy tumbler. So presentation top, but taste less than average.nnThe waiters were enjoying themselves so nothing to fault there.
Lovely food, great atmosphere, attentive staff.nStarter muscles were great- huge mussels, great money for value. Same goes for salmon main. The “tom yum mixed seafood pot” was a bit disappointing, it was tasty enough very loosely tasted like tom yum soup, seafood was cooked well and nothing was over cooked, however not a lot of seafood for £29 10-15 medium-sized mussels, 1 scallop, 2 pieces of 2x3 inch monk fish. Would go again, would just avoid ordering the seafood pot.
Highly recommend. We really enjoyed a Friday night dinner. While it was great to see the restaurant was busy the service was quick, friendly and efficient. All of the staff were welcoming and ensured that we had everything that we wanted. Importantly our dinner was piping hot and served on warm crockery and the red wine was at the correct temperature. The venison soup and main were to die for. A must.
