My wife and I stayed for 4 nights over Christmas and paid for the Christmas package, which included dinner and breakfast. We always enjoy staying at the Angel, the staff are excellent, as is the food and service. We were unfortunate this time with the room we were allocated. It was spacious and comfortable but, it had the smallest wardrobe imaginable. My wife managed to put most of her clothes in it but mine had to stay in the suitcase. It seems a little strange because it is placed in a large alcove where a good size wardrobe could be built in. Another problem was the toilet bowl. It would be excellent for a five year old, but for an adult to sit down on it, and stand up again, is a struggle. How someone who is six feet plus manages it, could make a good Monty Python sketch. The final disappointment was the room location. The bottle banks were just opposite, so you can imagine the number of bottles being dumped over the festive period. Then there was the garbage truck stopping right under our window very early in the morning to take on its load. Overall, a wonderful hotel, but I will be more careful with my room selection in future.
I first stayed at the Angel in 1976 when, as a junior research assistant , I was involved in a project at then newly opened West Suffolk Hospital to which I cycled each day. Returning 50 years later was an enjoyable trip down memory lane to find the hotel as charming as I recall, with great facilities and service. Sadly the hospital ,which I also revisited though not by bike has not survived sowell, suffering structural decay and is, fortunately, to be rebuilt. Congratulations to all at the Angel and best wishes for the next 50 years.
Very comfortable , warm and well eqipped room.nExceptionally good service in parking my car and dealing with my luggage.nVery helpful reception and bar staff, managing to be friendly without being obsequious or invasive.nVery good atmosphere in spite of a lot of people in the hotel on a Saturday night.nWe also had cocktails one weekend night and that was quiet and very nice surroundings and again very friendly good service
Haven't been to The Angel since the refurbishment and was pleasantly surprised at the change. However, did not enjoy ambience in the bar, found it quite cold with the grey colouring, although the resident's lounge was very cosy.nSadly, was disappointed with the dinner on the Sunday evening, very limited so ordered the roast beef which was lacking in taste. Did not measure up to previous dinners at The Angel.
A fine hotel that really is a cut above. It's nicely situated in a lovely town. Our room was comfortable and had a nice view of the abbey gardens. Our dinner and breakfast were delicious. What really makes the difference to a business is its staff, and everyone we spoke to at the Angel were fantastic.
