The Albion

Story

The Albion Ale House or The Albion is a Grade II listed public house in Conwy, North Wales. Built in 1921, it is a three-room pub with Art Nouveau decor that underwent major renovation in 2012. The Albion is jointly operated by four North Wales breweries and real ales from these breweries and other beers are served through eight hand pumps. The Albion Ale House was named the 2013 Wales Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), and named one of the world's best bars by The Guardian. The four breweries that co-run The Albion are Conwy Brewery of Llysfaen, Bragdy Nant of Llanrwst, Great Orme Brewery of Llandudno, and Purple Moose Brewery of Porthmadog.HistoryThe Albion was built in 1921 on the site of a previous pub. By mid-2010 the ale house was not profitable and had fallen into disrepair. It was sold by its owner, Punch Taverns, to Arthur Ellis, a local businessman. The Albion remained closed for a year while renovation work was carried out at a total cost of £100,000. Ellis arranged for the four local breweries to co-operate in running the pub on its reopening.

Very friendly staff. Place was heaving when we were there but locals were cool and my date and I had a great time. She left her scarf accidentally and we only noticed at the next pub. We went back about an hour later and it was in the back kindly put there by an honest staff member waiting for us to pick up. We will be back! Many thanks for your great service and tasty beverages.

I know the Albion has had national press coverage over how good the beer / atmosphere is, but it is well deserved... We have been coming here since the 4 breweries reopened it and the selection of ale is the best i have seen... complimented by open fires, great bar snacks (from the local butcher), this is the perfect pub for a pint and some scratchings.... Child and dog friendly....

The place was almost empty by the time we visit but it was a rainy day and inside the fire was welcoming. The smell of the coal fire and the original interior decorations made us stay for a couple of pints, picked eggs and snacks. The mulled cider was very good.

Wide selection of real ales. Real open fire. Friendly staff. Unspoilt pub. Brilliant!

Excellent selection of real ales in fascinating 1920s proper pub. Just 2 minor gripes 1) due to frequent ale changes, you never know what you're going to get and 2) instead of standard nuts in packets they stock fancy flavoured nuts in jars, which don't keep fresh and crunchy. BUT these are truly nit picking issues in an excellent pub with great service and lovely beer in historic surroundings. Don't leave Conwy without visiting this pub!
