Used library today as a one off- my boyfriend sat a skills test for teacher training (we’re from Canterbury in Kent and we drove up), so thought I would make use of my time waiting by visiting here! Signed up and got my library card in time for today. Staff all friendly and wonderfully helpful. HOWEVER, library is a glorified homeless shelter! I was highly intimidated, on edge and at times SCARED to be in there- especially as a woman on my own. Sat downstairs at a secluded table (within ear/sight range of a tutor and student- only table left) within 5m of my boyfriend leaving for his test, a man who stunk of weed and booze just came and sat right next to me- in a secluded area. He leant into me a couple of times and kept looking into my bag! He was there to CHARGE HIS PHONE- didn’t even pick up one book! I packed up my things within 20m of him being there (tutor and student had left, so I was completely alone with high/drunk man next to me) and made some excuse about needing to print something, so I could move away. Went upstairs and conditions were a little better- nice and quiet with lots of hard working men, women and students using the area correctly. HOWEVER, a group of 8 homeless people came up and sat in the far corner (away from where I was), again they were drunk and also making a huge amount of noise- in the silent area! Staff gave one verbal warning and they carried on with the noise but left 20m ish later! Again they were a highly intimidating group of men and women and I didn’t feel safe at all. They too came and stood behind me for a prolonged period of time, leaning close to me and my bag. Why on earth is the library not a cardholders only? The homeless are just using it as a shelter, charging station or place to sleep. I completely empathise with the homeless, however when I feel intimidated AND they aren’t even looking at any books....why do they let them in?!

I like this library. Staff are generally nice except of an older Indian woman. This mad woman wants to show library card if you someone needs to use a toilet :-) A little too noisy downstairs.

There's always some form of disturbance occurring upstairs in the quiet study area. Just yesterday there was a fight between a staff worker and a homeless guy who was sleeping in the library, this would've been somewhat acceptable however this argument took up a whole hour!

Large spacious local library for residents only. Great location in Stratford centre. Near many local amenities, shops, bus stops, and Morrison supermarket. About 5-7 minutes walk from Stratford tube and bus stations. There are many student campuses nearby and UEL uni. Helpful staff. But copy machines were not working when I needed to copy documents for my MA research studies there. Hopefully they fixed it.
