We are the University of London's central library and the home library for the School of Advanced Study.

Story

Senate House Library is a world-class academic research Library, located in Bloomsbury, Central London. It is the central library for the University of London and the School of Advanced Study.

The library houses and cares for more than 2 million books and 1,200 archival collections, it is one of the UK’s largest academic libraries focused on the arts, humanities, and social sciences. It holds a wealth of primary source material from the medieval period to the modern age.

As well as being a research and academic library it holds regular exhibitions and events open to the public.

I visit Senate House Library to borrow books and study. The building is magnificent , the library is well-equipped and staff are helpful. I particularly like the café, the cosy seats, and the well-arranged study space. Hope that I can visit the Senate House Library again!
Best Library in London, and I have visited a good many libraries in the past three years. As a grad student, I have been using the SHL virtually every day now, and it has been a sheer pleasure. The ability to borrow a laptop entirely for free, the extraordinary range of books and availability of rare editions, sometimes surpassing even that of the BL, the lush leather sofa room, and the extraordinarily courteous, professional, and patient staff have made this library by far the best work space a researcher could hope for. I have already warmly recommended the SHL to my colleagues and will continue to do so in the future.
Probably the best library for university students in London, the opening hours are very flexible and the library provides a reliable environment to study. Of course due to the library being very popular, at around midday/afternoon it can get quite busy but there is always a seat somewhere. There are also charging ports near the desks which are massively helpful.
Back today twenty years on from hiding here at uni for work, brilliant library
Terrible chairs, no plug sockets... I mean, sure, it's an old building and you can briefly pretend that you live in the 19th century cholera, anyone?, but if you actually want to study go elsewhere.
A brilliant and classical library hidden in the Senate house building University of London. Good place to go and good environment to study. University of London students can get a free library card to access.
Read it was a good study space but that missed the point it isn’t a public library, 5£ entry per day
Great place to studying. Free access to all UoL students. Very warm in winter.
My most favourite library in London. Beautiful exteriors and interiors, including original period brass fixtures and fittings, marble cladding and oak-strip flooring in the main reading rooms.
