Southgate Underground Station

Story

Southgate is a London Underground Piccadilly line station in Southgate. It is located between Arnos Grove and Oakwood stations and is in Travelcard Zone 4.HistorySouthgate station opened on 13 March 1933 with Oakwood on the second phase of the northern extension of the Piccadilly line from Finsbury Park to Cockfosters. Prior to the station's opening, alternative names were suggested including "Chase Side" and "Southgate Central". On opening, local residents were given a free return ticket to Piccadilly Circus.ArchitectureThe station is built in the Art Deco/Streamline Moderne design style using brick, reinforced concrete and glass and is one of the best known of the many stations Charles Holden designed for London Underground. The station building is circular with a flat projecting concrete roof. Externally, the flat roof of the raised central section appears, impossibly, to be supported by nothing more than a horizontal band of windows that provide daylight to the ticket hall. The roof is actually supported, umbrella-like, from a central column within the ticket hall. The whole building is topped by an illuminated feature resembling a Tesla coil.

Very architecturally interesting building, staff were unfriendly though and couldn't issue us a child ticket for a 5 year old, so we had to pay extra. Trains were on time although old, dating from theatre 70s.
Elegant decor, authentic art deco, excellent connection to London via piccadilly circus line. V reliable services and friendly staff.
I went to the underground to speak somebody that would be able to help me in some sort of way. But not as a single person was there to help. I came back after a good 15 minutes because i was waiting for a bus, and there was still nobody there to help.
I has often go to Southgate as is lovely, quiet town with lots of small shops where I can easily shops for my necessary, daily needs. Easy transportation by bus & underground. Nice, clean town.
Beautiful Station, Wonderful Uplighters on the escalator and platform level, Easy Access To busses, the charcoal grill and kind staff are The reason It is my number 1 favourite tube station.
The police are going to have a field day at the fruad and thief Brian's expense.
Nice Station in a good location with good connections to buses. Renamed Gareth Southgate for a few days after the world cup.
Always nice to travel from Southgate. Staff at the news stand is friendly and helpful and the station cashier is super nice. What I didn't like is that not all card machines had the cash option but I believe that it was just for a while. Place is safe and you can see police guarding it really often.
Definitely in my top 5 tube stations. Some nice coffee places nearby as well.
Central location with many bus links. The station is average standard, but the location makes it very important. All the major banks have branches near the station. The are many shops and businesses nearby. No car parking, but car car pickups and drop offs are possible.
