Checked in today. Have stayed a few times before. Unbelievably able to check in early was not expecting this! Lovely duty manager checked me in and carried my case to my fabulous room ‘comfy’ def more than that. Expansive shower room! So happy. Meeting friends here tomorrow for afternoon tea. Gobsmacked by the service and so love my room not leaving it except for a snack in the bar.so happy
Bit of a “game of two halves”. South Lodge isn’t cheap; £425 per night, bed and breakfast. The positives: the amazing spa which has been thoughtfully and stylishly done, my massage with lovely Sarah my friend pronounced hers “so-so”, the fabulous grounds and cheery staff at breakfast.nThe negatives; food overall. Camellia is eye-poppingly expensive and pretty average. It has a £90 pp three course menu offer and if you fancy only one course, as my friend and I did, you’ll be charged £50 plus service, though the price isn’t printed on the menu. When we queried at reception we were told “95% of guests take three courses” as if, for the remaining 5% who don’t, it’s ok for them to guess how much they will be charged. Two small glasses of wine and one course each, one, a small chicken breast and the other, a disc of pastry and some curried vegetables: £160…nBotanica at the spa is more reasonably priced, but closes at 6pm till later in the year. Neither restaurant has much in the way of lighter dishes oddly, my gnocchi at Botanica came deep fried very disappointing for a 5* hotel. In the end we were glad for the advice of one of the members to try the Crabtree pub across the road where the food was excellent.nAll in all, South Lodge falls just short of living up to its 5* billing, which is a shame.
Really lovely overnight stay to celebrate our anniversary. The food at Camelia & Botanica were great, we loved the breakfast and healthy options at botanica. The rooms were quirky but comfortable. The spa facilities were fantastic, even has a natural swimming pond which was really refreshing to use. We tried out a massage, the therapists were skilled and professional. The grounds are well kept and very beautiful.
The restaurant there was absolutely perfect. I've never had such amazing waiting staff. You aren't rushed to eat, pay, leave like many other similarly priced establishments.nnNaturally it's on the pricey side but the quality of the food is well worth it. The staff have had a very high standard of training, which is evidenced by their friendly demeanor and good knowledge of the menu and wine list.nnWill absolutely be coming here again for dinner.
Our second stay at South Lodge and another wonderful weekend. We stayed in one of the new Lakeside Lodges - absolutely stunning modern interiors, such a peaceful location and gorgeous deck to relax on with a huge tin jacuzzi bath. Lots of lovely touches - welcome cocktail, fizz and snacks. We had the breakfast hamper delivered which was terrific. The spa is lovely - particularly the swimming pond with newts and flowers - and the outdoor jacuzzi is perfect. Will definitely be back.
