I would give 10 stars if I could! Great atmosphere, best Thai food I have had in London, great drinks, fast and friendly service, and a separate vegan menu on request. A big thank you to our waitress Victoria who was incredibly attentive and kind. She double checked ingredients with me because I am pregnant without being asked :. My husband and I shared the vegetarian/vegan set menu and it was incredibly flavourful. I highly recommend the green curry. We even ordered more of it because we couldn’t get enough. We will definitely come back! Vegetarian options: Papaya salad yum bai bua bok, green curry gaeng khiao waan jay, stir fry pad pak mango sticky rice Dietary restrictions: I am pregnant and the waitress even double checked certain ingredients with me that even I haven’t thought about like papaya.
Inventive and flavorful Thai cuisine set in a converted warehouse. Great concept! I really loved the unique menu choices. Very creative with beautiful plant based options, as well. Full drinks menu but I always stick to a classic Singha beer. Check this place out! It’s totally worth it. If you like Thai, you’ll love som saa!
We had their recommended set lunch menu which offered a very well balanced , tasty and interesting meal. The food was delicious, a herby salad , not as spicy as a papaya salad but with all the right Thai taste notes you want. Service was on point, friendly and efficient. Definitely worth a try.Food: 5/5
Grilled Chicken Skewers were marinated well. Very delicious. They were just slightly salty for me personally. The sea bass was cooked very well. The seasoning had mint and shallots. Great combination.Food: 5/5
This is possibly one of the most authentic Thai restaurants in town. But beware food is really spicy & designed for dragons. We had three appetisers & three mains among the three of us. Food was really good & we already felt too full afterwards. Of all the dishes, the deep fried sea bass was particularly memorable. We were served by Sabati who was possibly the best waitress we had so far met in town. The lady was not only just attentive & all smiles. She anticipated what the clients needed & took proactive actions, like bringing us extra glasses of water. We are so impressed & feel this has to be shared. Atmosphere is the kind of grunge / warehouse vibe, casual & hip.
Went for lunch with my husband, I am vegan and GF and we decided both to have set menu, my husband is not vegan. When food arrived, we didn’t see any prawns and asked, and being told that my husband will get the same as me, all vegan except one beef dish. They never explained this will happen, in this case we would have a la cart. Regarding food it was nice, but not memorable, only one dish left good impression Tofu with lotus root. The Sticky rice was completely inedible, like plastic, so, we returned it back into its bag and left in a basket it came in. Mango salad didn’t have any taste, except chilli. So, up to you whether to visit this place, we won’t.
The deep fried sea bass was my highlight, and Thai milk tea. One thing I wanted to mention that the staff was very attentive maybe the manager. Our table was a little bit shaky, he noticed that and came to fix it. Food: 5/5
A modern thai restaurant in Whitechapel housed in a former fabric warehouse. It already has a reputation for being one of the best Thai restaurants in the city but this is my first visit to this establishment. I am told that som saa has been here since 2016 and had its origins here via a crowdfunding campaign after a successful popup more than a decade ago. It was a midweek evening and the place was bustling. It has a NY city feel with a cosy industrial space feel with distressed brick walls and arches punctuated by dark steel beams. The service was friendly and welcoming on my arrival. The interior space has a welcoming dining bar, a large dining room pocketed by intimate booths. Seating depends on if you are here in a group for a night on the town or for a date and they would not be disappointed. I sat at the bar and the entire space is dotted with Thai tchotchke acquired over the years which is a nice touch. The food is not a typical Thai I am accustomed to in asia but the flavours will not disappoint. My server was well trained and explained the menu and if I was here in a larger group the table menu which offered a wide selection of their menu would have been a good option. I opted for mu parlow which is a variation of the Thai street food khao kai moo - a 5 spice egg and braised pork served with rice and the gaeng phed red curryjay with jasmine rice. The flavors are certainly altered to suit the london taste buds. The mu parlow was tender and offered a nice balance of sweet palm sugar, fish sauce and dark soy sauce enhanced with spices. The curry was rich, thick and aromatic and although not typical of a gaeng phed I liked the vegan curry having swapped the usual meat/ seafood for a soya bean which soaks up the curry well and carries its rich flavour. The mean was paired with a lovely glass of rheigau Riesling. I like that you can order half portions in order to try more of the menu which shows a consideration for their diners requests. I enjoyed my meal and will be back the next time i am in the area to try the other plates on the menu. A 4.5+ rating overall ! Wonderful!
Pleasently surprised, the menu is not your normal high street Thai food like Penang or green Thai curry. Most I haven't heard of. The vegetarian menu was the best for me though I'm a consummate carnivore. We had the set menu for a company function. Would totally come back with the family.Food: 5/5
Extremely delighted with my lunch experience at Som Spa today. Will, our waiter, recommended us excellent dishes and he also gave us two Thai tea fudge which was heavenly and melt-in-the-mouth to round up our meal. The food here is well spiced, so if you’re into the piquant side, you will love this. Gai Ping Pak Dtai Chicken Skewer Wonderful grilled chicken, juicy and perfectly roasted with a tasty sauce made of tamarind. Daily Som Tam Papaya Salad This is an odyssey on your tastebuds. The tart, fresh crunch of shaved young papayas, green beans, and cherry tomatoes dances with the sour and extremely hot fish sauce, whose flavours are drawn out by the dried prawns. It is extremely piquant though, so be wary. Gaeng Paed Neua Red Curry Beef Delicious curry stew with red hot oil and tender slices of beef. The vegetables and herbs used make the dish much more complex than I expected. Nahm Tok Pla Thort Isaan Fried Seabass Now this is the star of the meal. Crispy, well seasoned fried fish which small bones can be eaten married with a delightful waltz of herbs and fresh shallots. On top of rice, I assure you this is one of those bites you will remember for a long long time. Kanom Khao Mak Rice Custard A soft, boozy rice pudding due to the slight fermentation that is elevated with the sweet melancholy of coconut and longans. A seed cracker in the shape of lotus provides a smokiness and crunch that compliments the pudding.
