Shipley Country Park

Story

Shipley is a village in the south-east of Derbyshire in the East Midlands of England. Since 1974 it has been part of the Borough of Amber Valley. The population of the civil parish as taken at the 2011 Census was 710.Shipley is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, in the form Scipelei. The name apparently derives from the Old English scēap ('sheep') and lēah ('open ground, such as meadow, pasture, or arable land'). Thus it means 'sheep-clearing' or 'sheep-pasture'.Shipley separates the Ilkeston and Heanor urban areas, which are linked by the main A6007 road. It also incorporates most of the Shipley Country Park and the hamlet known as 'The Field' which is usually seen as the centre of the civil parish, with the Anglican Parish Church being at Cotmanhay, to the north of Ilkeston. The Nutbrook Canal, completed in 1796 linked Shipley to the Erewash Canal.

A good sized Park with lots to do. Access to the Park is free, but as always if you drive there is a fee to park in the closest car park. Although you can park on the road for free. The park itself has plenty to keep kids and grown ups entertained in any season. Walking, cycling, horse riding, bird watching, angling, picnicking, kite flying, jogging, wayfaring, photography are all possible. There is also a great little cafe called the Nutbrook coffee shop which has an excellent range of food and drinks.

Excellent country park with many footpaths. There is also a very good visitor centre and cafe and one of the lodge houses in the grounds does snacks etc. Very interesting history of the site. I have been coming for many years since it was first established on the former site of Shipley Hall. There are two lakes also. Only one downside. Some paths can be muddy after rain.

Miles of walks. Pick ur own way and make it up as u go along. Nice lakes x2. One great cafe and one lovely tuck shop style rest stop, plenty of open spaces, a small museum type place and a gift shop. Mobility scooter rental. Only down side will be condition of paths which let the place down when it's wet. But if ur prepared then it's not a problem

Great place to explore. There's a good range of paths, different open areas of grass, ponds and wooded areas. The main visitor centre has a good range of facilities and local souvenirs in the shop. The Derby Lodge is good to stop for a drink and a snack, but is about to be renovated which might brighten it up a bit

This is a lovely park, something for everyone. Secluded walks, open countryside, a fitness trim track. Children's playground, a couple of tea rooms for the thirsty. A visitor centre where you can buy a number of items, books, artwork, bric-a-brac etc. Fishing on a couple of lakes, bridleways for hacking out. Car parks are pay and display.
