Scottish National Gallery

Story

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is an art museum on Queen Street, Edinburgh. The gallery holds the national collections of portraits, all of which are of, but not necessarily by, Scots. It also holds the Scottish National Photography Collection.Since 1889 it has been housed in its red sandstone Gothic revival building, designed by Robert Rowand Anderson and built between 1885 and 1890, donated by John Ritchie Findlay, owner of The Scotsman newspaper. The gallery reopened on 1 December 2011 after being closed since April 2009 for the first comprehensive refurbishment in its history, which was carried out by Page\Park Architects.HistoryThe founder of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (1780), David Erskine, 11th Earl of Buchan, formed a collection of Scottish portraits in the late 18th century, much of which is now in the museum. In the 19th century, the Scottish historian Thomas Carlyle was among those calling for a Scottish equivalent of the very successful National Portrait Gallery, London, established in 1856, but the government in London refused to fund the venture. Eventually John Ritchie Findlay stepped in and paid for the entire building, costing £50,000.

My partner and I don’t frequently visit art galleries however we thought we would pop into this one as we had some spare time. We were both pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed the gallery and how interesting some of the paintings were. It is immaculate inside and the building itself is beautiful. If you have the time we would recommend
Having worked there during it's multi million pound renovation, I wanted to see the completely finished gallery. Very well laid out, good access for disabled. Good selection of art from Scotland, lots a space well lit. And of course the most famous Scottish painting, Monarch of the Glen is hung at the end of your wander around the gallery.
The National Galleries of Scotland, located in Edinburgh, is a renowned institution that houses an extensive collection of art spanning various periods and genres. During our recent weekday visit, we observed a moderate crowd, indicating its popularity among art enthusiasts. For individuals with a keen interest in the arts and creativity, this gallery offers a truly enriching experience. The collection boasts an impressive array of old paintings, showcasing the remarkable skills and techniques of artists from bygone eras, who managed to create such masterpieces without the aid of modern technology and advanced devices. Overall, the National Galleries of Scotland is a must-visit destination for art aficionados seeking inspiration and a deeper understanding of artistic heritage.
One of the very best museums in the world and is certainly the pride of Scotland. You really need the whole day to appreciate the magnificent pieces displayed at the museum. There is no entrance fee but of course you may want to donate £5 or more voluntarily. Highly recommend!
Surprisingly rich collection across multiple centuries and styles. Simple and straightforward presentation. Some surprising masterpieces from El Greco and Van Gogh.nAbsolutely worth a visit and completely free.
