Scottish National Gallery

Story

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is an art museum on Queen Street, Edinburgh. The gallery holds the national collections of portraits, all of which are of, but not necessarily by, Scots. It also holds the Scottish National Photography Collection.Since 1889 it has been housed in its red sandstone Gothic revival building, designed by Robert Rowand Anderson and built between 1885 and 1890, donated by John Ritchie Findlay, owner of The Scotsman newspaper. The gallery reopened on 1 December 2011 after being closed since April 2009 for the first comprehensive refurbishment in its history, which was carried out by Page\Park Architects.HistoryThe founder of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (1780), David Erskine, 11th Earl of Buchan, formed a collection of Scottish portraits in the late 18th century, much of which is now in the museum. In the 19th century, the Scottish historian Thomas Carlyle was among those calling for a Scottish equivalent of the very successful National Portrait Gallery, London, established in 1856, but the government in London refused to fund the venture. Eventually John Ritchie Findlay stepped in and paid for the entire building, costing £50,000.

The National Gallery of Scotland is definitely worth a visit. The art objects are beautifully displayed in the spacious rooms. The museum offers ample opportunity to get acquainted with Scottish artists through the ages. Since the museum is free, it also offers the opportunity to return every now and then. Certainly pleasant on a cold, stormy winter day when you have blown out of your jacket during a visit to Edinburgh castle.
**A Treasure Trove of Art: National Gallery of Scotland** nnMy visit to the National Gallery of Scotland was nothing short of spectacular. Nestled in the heart of Edinburgh, this gallery is a haven for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by a stunning collection of artworks that span centuries, from the Renaissance to modern masterpieces.nnThe gallery's layout is thoughtfully designed, making it easy to navigate through the various rooms and exhibits. Highlights of my visit included works by Titian, Rembrandt, and Turner, each piece offering a unique glimpse into the past. The Scottish art section was particularly captivating, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the nation.nnOne of the best aspects of the National Gallery is the free admission, allowing everyone to experience the beauty of these timeless artworks. However, I highly recommend donating if you can, as it helps maintain this cultural gem for future generations.nnPro Tip: **Plan your visit during the early hours or on weekdays to avoid the crowds.** The gallery can get quite busy, especially during weekends and holidays. Also, take advantage of the guided tours—they provide fascinating insights into the artworks and their historical context.nnDespite the bustling atmosphere, the gallery offers plenty of quiet corners where you can sit and reflect on the art. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions and provide information.nnOverall, my visit to the National Gallery of Scotland was an enriching and inspiring experience. Whether you're an art aficionado or simply looking for a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city, this gallery is a must-visit. Can't wait to return and explore more!
The National Galleries of Scotland is a great place to see amazing Artworks. The collection includes beautiful paintings from different periods, and the building itself is also nice to explore. It’s free to enter, a must-visit for art lovers!
The National Galleries of Scotland provided a truly exceptional experience during my visit on a public holiday. I was pleasantly surprised to have no wait time to enter, even on a busy day. The galleries are beautifully organized, showcasing an impressive collection of art that is both inspiring and educational. The staff was welcoming and helpful, adding to the positive experience. I don’t think it’s necessary to buy tickets in advance as the entry process was smooth and efficient. A must-visit for art lovers and anyone looking for a cultural experience in Scotland!
Really cool exhibits to look at. Admission is completely free which is a nice change considering most tourist attractions in Edinburgh will set you back £20 or more each time.nnDefinitely worth going to kill an hour or two and snap some pictures of some of the art pieces that catch your eye. Very nice atmosphere too.
