Great glasses with a diverse range of portraits from the 1500s to the present day. I enjoyed the eclectic collection of modern day portraits. The great hall is also very beautiful and the library with the display of death masks is also worth a visit. It’s free to visit and there’s a nice cafe on site too.

Probably one of my favourite galleries I visited in Edinburgh. The National Portrait Gallery brings together many different eras around the world -- admittedly, I think the Scottish history was probably the weakest. The way the exhibitions are arranged means the periods flow really well into one another. Moving through the rooms almost feels like watching the story of History unfold.nnThe layout made it easy to follow the timeline, and I appreciated how clearly everything was explained. The descriptions were concise and understandable, which made it easy to understand the nuance behind the portraits and the wider historical context. Some of the most beautiful art I've ever seen was here, and they had some Monet.nnIt’s also a very comfortable gallery to spend time in. The building itself is beautiful and central, and there are plenty of places to sit and take in the artwork. Like many of the national museums and galleries in Edinburgh, entry is free, which is wonderful. I would definitely recommend donating if you visit to help support and preserve these incredible collections.

I had a truly wonderful visit to the National Galleries Scotland: Portrait on 27/02/2026. The experience was absolutely amazing and exceeded my expectations.nnThe gallery is beautifully presented, with stunning architecture and a calm, welcoming atmosphere. The portraits are fascinating and thoughtfully displayed, allowing visitors to connect with Scotland’s rich history, culture, and inspiring individuals.nnThe overall environment was very pleasant, peaceful, and enjoyable. Everything was well organized, and it was easy to explore and appreciate each exhibition. It was both educational and memorable.nnI highly recommend visiting National Galleries Scotland: Portrait to anyone who appreciates art, history, and beautiful surroundings. It was a very nice experience, and I look forward to visiting again in the future.

Housed in an absolutely stunning, purpose built home, the Portraits are beautifully displayed.nThis collection is housed over 3 floors and around an inner space.nIt was very pleasing to see the care and attention that has been put into curating the works, each one given its own space.nI enjoyed the Alfred Buckham display and also the modern portraits of Scots such as Doddie Weir, Billy Connolly and Carol Ann Duffy.nThere’s a good lift perfect for wheelchairs, buggies etc, there are lots of lockers for storing coats and bags, good toilet facilities, a small shop and a very busy cafe.nDid I mention it’s free?!!

So this is probably my favourite gallery. The building itself is a work of art. A subtle mixture of old and new. The grand hall is amazing.nnThere are pictures of various types and styles - something for everyone... and to discuss at length.nnThe layout is relaxing, every thing is accessible and there a plenty of chairs to take a rest. There are large text descriptions.nnThe library is a nice place to relax, even among the death masks. My favourite is Voltaire, such a cheery chap!nnCafe serves nice food/cafe and the shop has decent relevant stuff.nnThere is both a permanent and temporary displays. I can easily spend a day there... and it's all for free.
