We visited Restaurant 1890 and it was superb. The tasting menu was excellent especially the short rib. The wine pairing was brilliant too. The service was really good especially given the restaurant has only just opened. We’ll definitely come back again. Thank you!
What looked to be an amazing gastronomic experience I was looking forward to, and I am pleased to say it was every bit as amazing as I had hoped. The service was performed at the highest standard with attention to every small detail. The waiters and hosts respectfully and competently checked on our table without becoming intrusive. Each dish was served with a brief description of the ingredients without overdramatic history lessons. Each plate looked and tasted equally incredible. Clearly destined for Michelin stars. I will definitely come back to experience it again.
This is your choice if you want incredible food, excellent service and a superb/calm surrounding. Rather than just a fancy dinner, this is an experience for a special occasion. I definitely recommend this place. For two people, we paid around 400-500 £ in total, but absolutely worth it!
Honestly possibly one of the best gastronomic experiences of my lifetime: nine course mystery meal with wine pairing options. The staff were awesome, the food extraordinary, and ambiance was perfect. Lives up to Gordon Ramsey's exacting standards. They even inquired in advance of any dietary restrictions!Food: 5/5
Pros: -amazing atmosphere music, lighting, decorations with only around 10 tables in total -very attentive staff -incredible presentation of the food Cons: -most of the food did not taste spectacular we had the 8 course tasting menu, and of those 8, I only truly enjoyed 2: the oyster and the scallops
Entering the famous Savoy Hotel, you will need to make a left turn, up the narrow staircase, squirm past the AMERICAN BAR patrons, before you arrive at the Restaurant nestled in the upper corner of the hotel. Somehow they managed to squeeze a world-class culinary experience into the tiny passageways inside the historical building. The outstanding staff will usher you efficiently into your seats, and the parade will soon begin. Champagne? Yes! Amuse-Bouche? Right on! Add some freshly shaved black truffles to the langoustine? We don't mind at all! The curse of being offered tasty dishes is of course that it ruins everything that comes afterwards. That will happen. You will need to brace yourselves for this outcome. By the end of the meal, I could no longer stomach the idea of breakfast the next day. I was traumatized to the point of jumping out of my seat when offered the final dessert. Let's make that a takeaway instead. Pretty please? What do I remember from the coma inducing meal? Was it the perfectly melted cheese sauce? Perhaps the tender langoustine? Maybe the rhubarb berry pre-dessert? Nay. It was the freshly baked bread that gave me an enduring memory: ugh. I'm full!
Me and my friend went here for what we hoped would be a spectacular dinner last weekend of November. Unfortunately, it did not live up to our expectations. The atmosphere was beautiful and the staff was very attentive. However, the most important aspect failed to impress; the food. We had the 8 course tasting menu with the discovery wine pairing. The first two courses oyster and scallops were lovely. However, the bouillabaisse was not to our taste and when my friend ordered truffles with her meat, the truffle was tasteless. We had to send it back to the kitchen. The meat was very pleasant, but after this course, we were left very disappointed. The remainder of the menu comprised of only sweet items 4 in total. All courses were very sweet, and mostly paired with sweet wine. After 2 courses, we started feeling a bit nautious from all the sugar. One of the courses was taken away, and we were given a mango and passion fruit option with a cocktail on the side as a replacement. Even though this tasted better, it shows how the menu was not balanced, and comprised of too many sweet elements 4 out of 8. As a gourmet restaurant, we expect the chef to be able to put together a menu that balances sweet and savory. Considering the price, it was only the attentive staff that kept this review from being a 2 star review.
My wife and I were visiting from chicago and everything about our experience was fantastic and we are glad that we got in before the inevitable stars arrives! The room itself was nice and intimate, we were lucky to be seated over looking the savoy square so great people watching during the meal! The staff was amazing throughout the service, Ben the sommelier recommended a wine pairing that suited the meal perfectly and with the meal Sarah came over and explained what the concept of the restaurant was about and how dinner would be served. Don’t want to give too much away as it’s part of the fun As 1890 doesn’t give a menu to start with the aim being to just enjoy the experience of different food turning up I won’t give too much away but want to make some call outs. The tomato consommé was unbelievable, absolute explosion of flavor that was everything that an amazing tomato should taste like. It came with an accompanying Parker house roll, topped with the most amazing honey. Not too sweet, not too plain, packed full of floral flavors and incredible. It was made by Sarah’s family and unfortunately not available commercially! The honey was so incredible we ordered more bread just to get more honey The fish course was the highlight for my wife, the turbot was cooked incredibly with a caviar beurre blanc that was the only thing that could stop us talking about the bread in the previous course. My highlight was the short rib, the meat was tender but too much so and the bordelaise is something that I could have probably just have in a soup bowl and be completely happy. Throughout the meal the wine served by Ben and notes that were given were informative not only about the tasting notes of the wine but some information about the vineyard/terroir and grape varieties which paired nicely with the meal. We did the Discovery wine pairing and we were surprised by a few, the Patrimonio Blanc we thought started with a little “funk” in a good way I promise but then ended with a really nice buttery but crisp finish, it made the wine really enjoyable and different. The Tenuta Sette Pondi Podere was a great deep red that paired really well with the meat course. The service of wine was quick but informative and really a conversation about the wine instead of just feeling as though it was being read off a facts sheet. Also Ben offered unbiased opinions on some wines that you had choices between in the fish/meat course pairings. Sarah was amazing throughout the meal always checking in and having a great conversation. The rest of the staff was equally fantastic I just have a terrible memory for names, so thank you to all the team members there on the night we ate, all were amazing. Having dined quite a lot in restaurants of similar caliber you expect the service to be a little uptight and stiff, but this is absolutely not the case at 1890, all the staff were very friendly, very open to conversation about the food/wine/just the day. It was a complete breath of fresh air. I would absolutely recommend 1890 to anyone, food was incredible but the level of service matched it perfectly without being uptight or intimidating.
Worst food ever. Spent $500 for me and my wife. They served mullet that tasted like dead fish. I was able to only eat one bite. I got sick on the oyster it was completely slimy when I put it in my mouth and I should have spit it out. This was our first impression of London. Sucked 100percent. PS. Said they would contact me but never did. Don’t go!!!
Visited 1890 and was one of the best experiences I had. The food and service were outstanding. Every dish and pairing had so much attention to detail. A must go if value good quality ingredients, creative dishes, and attentive service.
