Tidy carpark, with access to the beach or point. You an see the foundations of round houses by the trig point (triangulation pillar). The sheep fold (stone wall) on your right, as you ascend, was built by prisoners-of-war during Napoleonic times. There are the remains of buildings on the top, attributed to the navy. Explosive devices were tested in the area, along with Bream down. Birnbeck pier was re-named HMS Birnbeck ,during the war. Ancient, defensive earthworks are easily found at the highest point. Far reaching views.

Sand point is not far from Weston-Super-Mare but it is down a smallish road alongside Sand bay. Sand bay is a a bit of a misnomer - there is sand there but there is an awful lot of mud too. Like it's neighbour Brean Down Sand point sticks out into the Bristol channel and was used for weapons testing during the second world war, some of these were never used. There is an interesting, although steep, walk along the headland from which you can see Flatholm and Steepholm islands as well as the welsh coast. The small road has passing places so be prepared to move into those as you drive along. The extensive beach is only fully covered on spring tides so grass and other salt tolerant plants grow over an extensive patch at the top of it.
