The place looked so inviting that we booked for a nice relaxing break for a couple of days. Arrived to find that the card used to hold the room had already been charged before our arrival, and then asked to put another £50 on a card which would not be charged. We were then directed to our room in a building that looked like a 70s council old folks home, up three lots of stairs, I had specifically asked for the minimum of stairs possible, the carpet in the entrance and on the stairs was grubby. On opening the door on the first floor there was a horrible smell like a stagnant pond, and on entering our room it seemed to be coming from the shower in the room. When we went out, there was no lighting on the steps outside leading to the car park as I am partially disabled this was quite daunting for me. Not happy. Further to this, the cooked breakfast was cold the first morning, so the second morning we went down soon after 7am. The cooked breakfast was cold again. The description given on the various hotel sites does not say anything about the accommodation being in a separate building up a very steep road, nor does it mention that your payment will actually be taken before arrival and you will have a £50 surcharge held on a card. These three things put a real dampener on our trip. If we had arrived by taxi and taken our bags out at the main reception, there is no way I could have got to the accommodation area.

Disappointing stay. Room was unchecked with dried blood under sink and razor head from previous occupants behind basin! Accommodation blocks reached by driving up a steep hill from main building and have wooden windows which do not stop outside noise including planes overhead late at night. Breakfast equally badly organised, we had to ask for a clean table, and then found there was no bread for toasting, milk, plates, eggs, tea spoons - all had run out and staff did not replenish until asked. At £105 per night we expected better, would not return or recommend.

The mansion house and watch tower are impressive BUT forget about that if you end up in the worse-than-student-bedsit accommodation blocks hidden at the back, which are dated (think 70's council flats), tiny, insecure and ill-equipped. Oh, and they smell like a nursing home!

satisfactory but disappointing. It look old but you get a room in a recent brick building, that is just like a standard hotel. And for that. It was the most expensive night on our motorcycle trip in England. It was the most expensive, but not the cleanest stay, nor the most inspiring, not the best bed and not the best room. We have had B&B for half the price of this place, but beats it on very aspect. So its not "bad", but mostly disappointing.
