A gorse covered nature reserve where various birds may be seen by the observant walker. Bullfinch, Linnet, Thrushnand many others. On the river, I have seen Cormorants, Goosander andnGoldeneye. This part of the river has historically been a centre for rowing, a sport beloved of Tynesiders long before football became popular. This tradition is well represented today as the number of rowing clubs bear witness. The area is well served with footpaths much used by local people.nAs I live to the north of the river I usually walk on the north bank, parking at Newburn riverside. However, the Newburn bridge offers opportunities on the south bank. A number of routes through the Willows to Ryton Village are available. These footpaths all entail crossing the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line so care must be exercised, ample warning signs at each crossing are displayed.nRyton Village is a delight and any walk that takes you through it is totally enhanced as consequence. My choice on 12th November'20 took the riverside path with the Willows on my left and the river on the right. The river at high tide is a sight to behold at this time of the year the sun, low in the sky creating a broad, shining silver ribbon. The path is shared with cyclists so the pedestrian, when reaching the point, after a mile or so, where the footpath left is indicated, may choose this quieter option to the left of the golf course. After a further half mile or so the railway line is crossed and a delightful rising footpath is followed through the woodland and theTyneside golf course emerging on to the leafy Westfield Lane which leads to Ryton Village. After walking through the village, return to the Newburn bridge is via Holburn Dene. 5 miles or 8 kilometres.n19th June '21. I paused at Ryton Village Green by the Old Cross. This is a blessed spot and gives an insight into pre-industrial Tyneside, a sylvan, genteel atmosphere pervades, most restful. Were it not for the parked vehicles, one could imagine it was 1795 again.....the date on the base of the Cross.
Wonderful place to visit. Many happy memories of childhood in this beautiful location and always trips imagination in picturing the famous battle that took place here between England and Scotland.
The google images don’t give this place justice. It is a big stretch of area you can explore, from fields and ponds to muddy woodland areas. There’s a lot of scenic spots and views, that it makes for a great escape from the city life of Newcastle. Even though it is in Ryton, Gateshead you can get there on a bus from Newcastle City Centre in 20 minutes or less if you drive. I’ve walked here a few times from my home in Fenham, as it’s only a 5 mile walk. This place is one of my safe havens where I come to relax, be one with nature and present. I recommend exploring the woodland areas and the greenery, then popping over to the rowing club on Newburn side of the river for a few drinks on the balcony with a gorgeous view of The Willows and woods, can’t recommend it enough!
Excellent area for walking and dog exercise. Good access to riverside on coast to coast path. Parking can be busy, but ok if you’re careful.
Lovely peaceful place
