Story

The School of Dentistry at the University of Liverpool is the university's dental school. The dental school is attached to an associated hospital, which contains more than 160 dental units, where students train on NHS patients under supervised practice from dentists.HistoryThe Liverpool School of Dentistry was founded in 1861, twenty years before the formation of the University of Liverpool in 1881. Originally called the Liverpool Dispensary for Diseases of the Teeth, it was operated by Captain W J Newman, who in his own private clinic devoted three mornings a week to treating patients for free. By 1863 his dental rooms at 82 Russell Street were renamed the Liverpool Dental Hospital. Gradually more dentists joined Newman, offering their service for free. The school was recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons in 1876, and in 1880, with a growing number of dentists, patients and students, the hospital moved to 50 Mount Pleasant. This was the start of full-time students being taught at the hospital, which became associated with the University in 1899.The Dental School and Hospital on Pembroke Place was opened on 19 March 1910 and was designed by architect G de C Fraser at a cost of £13,493. The hospital fully merged with the university when the Louis Cohen Chair in Dental Surgery was established in 1920. W H Gilmour, the third dean, obtained the first professorship in dentistry in the UK. Liverpool University founded a Chair in Dental Science in 1963.This school was later demolished to make way for the current dental school in 1969. Subsequently, the hospital has undergone a series of major refurbishments in order to modernise and upgrade the building. In 2003 Cynthia Pine became the first woman to lead a British dentistry school. An Operative Techniques Suite was built in 2006. In 2008 the on site lecture theatres were refurbished and new education rooms built in an extension of the East side of the hospital. The most recent additions are a new sedation suite on the west side of the building with the addition of new research laboratories to replace the Edwards building and a complete refurbishment of the interior of the hospital.

Left feeling robbed of my dignity, hurt, ignored, patronised and treated with such disdain during one of the most vulnerable & trying points in my life. I have been a carer for both my parents, one of whom died a traumatic death from cancer a few months ago and the other currently slipping away, again from cancer I simply do not get time to manage my own health, I also have a severe phobia from bad dental experience as a child. I've been in agony with my teeth almost 24/7 for weeks now and it's impacting my ability to provide my mother's care. She collapsed due to a blood clot on her lungs recently. I visited the nearby dental hospital for advice on accessing care as a busy carer with a severe phobia. I walked to the desk, the 2 receptionists didn't acknowledge my presence for some time, until I told one lady I was seeking advice, she looked at the time and said "bit late isn't it" shaking her head at me. I reiterated that I just wanted some quick advice, perhaps a leaflet. She ignored me and after a pause walked away from the desk, returning with a green form, which she slammed on the desk in front of me without explanation, she then said "you've got no chance, it's ten to five", never explaining the form. I eventually spoke to a medical staff member I saw in the reception area who very briefly explained things to me, that's all i needed and wanted - simple info and the basic level of respect most civilised people extend to each other every day. As a phobic patient it took me a lot to push myself through that door, and I was treated so poorly I left totally frustrated, desperate and carrying a newfound sense of hopeless, the total lack of compassion displayed by this woman had such an impact that I began to feel emotionally overwhelmed, I'm struggling with major depression and anxiety due to the pressure of nursing my parents through their deaths alone, and this person's callous, caustic, unprofessional and confrontational demeanor really crushed me emotionally at my weakest point, I'm ashamed to admit it but I couldn not even find words to stand up for myself, I was truly crushed and I left her with tears in my eyes. I meet lots of inspirational, dedicated, genuinely humane medical staff as a carer, even caterers, cleaners whose compassion towards other human beings restores one's faith in people. It's very rare that one encounters such an uncompassionate, rude, crass and unpleasant individual as I did at the Liverpool University Dental Hospital, but when you cross their paths at a time in your life when you're feeling so vulnerable, weak and fragile.... I have to say, her toxic, malevolent attitude I think is far more destructive than perhaps she would ever imagine. I'm ashamed for our NHS that this is the level of service I received as a patient, ashamed that our dog has never received such poor treatment at a vet, I'm ashamed and angry that I collapsed emotionally and could not find the words or strength to challenge this woman's attitude or complain to her superior, thus enabling her to inflict her negativity on others, and drag down what I'm sure is probably an otherwise reputable organisation.

Dental work done is great, the students are friendly and knowledgeable. The tutors are brilliant and happy to take time out to ensure work is done to a good standard. The only thing I can fault is the phone system; if you have to wait on hold for more than five minutes then you get booted off the line and forced to leave a message. Edit: to all the people badmouthing the wait times etc, I can’t speak for them but I have been multiple times to have short notice work done due to complications and have always been treated excellently. You could show up on the day and be seen there and then, as the staff are more than happy to help you out, even with no appointment. People complaining about transport links need to realise that they are getting FREE DENTAL CARE to the highest standards here. I travelled 45 mins back and to when I was in uni because I was having expensive dental work done and paying nothing for it. The work they do here is excellent.

Student dentists are lovely. However, some of the tutors should remember that a human being is sitting on the chair when checking work done. I was made to feel extremely awkward on a few occasions.
