The Royal Liverpool University Hospital

Story

The School of Dentistry at the University of Liverpool is the university's dental school. The dental school is attached to an associated hospital, which contains more than 160 dental units, where students train on NHS patients under supervised practice from dentists.HistoryThe Liverpool School of Dentistry was founded in 1861, twenty years before the formation of the University of Liverpool in 1881. Originally called the Liverpool Dispensary for Diseases of the Teeth, it was operated by Captain W J Newman, who in his own private clinic devoted three mornings a week to treating patients for free. By 1863 his dental rooms at 82 Russell Street were renamed the Liverpool Dental Hospital. Gradually more dentists joined Newman, offering their service for free. The school was recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons in 1876, and in 1880, with a growing number of dentists, patients and students, the hospital moved to 50 Mount Pleasant. This was the start of full-time students being taught at the hospital, which became associated with the University in 1899.The Dental School and Hospital on Pembroke Place was opened on 19 March 1910 and was designed by architect G de C Fraser at a cost of £13,493. The hospital fully merged with the university when the Louis Cohen Chair in Dental Surgery was established in 1920. W H Gilmour, the third dean, obtained the first professorship in dentistry in the UK. Liverpool University founded a Chair in Dental Science in 1963.This school was later demolished to make way for the current dental school in 1969. Subsequently, the hospital has undergone a series of major refurbishments in order to modernise and upgrade the building. In 2003 Cynthia Pine became the first woman to lead a British dentistry school. An Operative Techniques Suite was built in 2006. In 2008 the on site lecture theatres were refurbished and new education rooms built in an extension of the East side of the hospital. The most recent additions are a new sedation suite on the west side of the building with the addition of new research laboratories to replace the Edwards building and a complete refurbishment of the interior of the hospital.

It was one of the best hospitals I’ve ever been treated at.nThe doctors were excellent, and the nurses were so sweet.nI stayed in this hospital for 5 days. Most of the staff were wonderful, caring, and attentive.nTina a nurse or assistant was such a lovely person.nThe only complaint I have is about the receptionist — when I arrived, she didn’t want to register me to be seen by a doctor because she said my case wasn’t an emergency which clearly wasn’t true, since I ended up being hospitalized for 5 days.nShe isn’t a doctor and shouldn’t be making that kind of judgment. A patient knows why they are going to A&E.nApart from that, I give this hospital a 10 out of 10.nThank you very much
2 days in this hospital with severe head pains all they done was take blood pressure. After asking for X-ray or MRi the nurse got aggressive shouting at me saying the doctor will decide what you have. Then they told me to ask my GP for a referral and got security to kick me out I’m a disabled veteran blown up in Afghanistan I am now being refused treatment on the NHS
I found the staff absolutely supportive and welcoming. While i observed the reception staff at the main reception as well as in the cardiac section, they were both wonderfully patient in assisting people specifically in the cardiac section.nDirection signs are pretty visible and placed at proper places, so even if you don't ask around, you can still get to your desired department.
My Daughter was very poorly and thought it may be something contagious. We were made to wait in the foyer for hours, it was freezing with the door keep opening. We asked for a blanket - too busy. No seat provided, drink and food machines out of order. However, once we saw Dr Mohammed things looked up / he was so caring and took my Daughter seriously and got in touch with the right department - also got her a blanket as we had to go back to the foyer. We didn't have to wait too long before being taken to a cubicle in A & E where we were given sandwiches and a drink, My Daughter went to sleep. The Dr came from Infectious diseases and he was lovely, sympathetic and he explained everything patiently. He needed a chaperone as he was examining my Daughter. Enter Nurse Brandon. He is absolutely in the right profession, I can't sing his praises enough. He knew I was upset and he listened to me, he didn't judge my Daughter and he made us both feel safe and relaxed. He gave me the warmest of hugs which was so appreciated. I really hope he gets to hear how much we appreciated him - although we did tell him - but others need to know too. We don't know the outcome yet, but Brandon certainly helped us feel somewhat better
Ineffective procedures resulting in EIGHT hour wait. Spent over an hour calling the same person who had clearly gotten tired of waiting and left.nCommon sense should prevail here, after calling their name a few times, it's obvious they're no longer at the hospital.nHCP's calling people up, who have already been taken in by a different HCP resulting in the walking round and round the waiting room shouting like demented staff.nThis was happening every few minutes. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing here, it's really disappointingnThe triage system was great but thereon after was appalling, at best.nVomit all over the floor from two patients staff aware and made no effort to clean it up. Drunks, drug addicts and people with significant mental health issues. Security spent the 8 hrs I waited, sitting in the reception with the receptionist - paying zero attention to anything happening within the waiting area.
