Story

The Royal Institution is an independent charity connecting people with the world of science through events, education and the CHRISTMAS LECTURES.

Mission

Science shapes our lives, our culture and the world around us.It’s the medical treatment that may save your life. It’s the device in your pocket that connects you to the world. And it’s how we will solve the major global challenges of the future.

Our mission is to harness science for the maximum benefit of society.

The importance of our mission cannot be overstated. It was recognised by the 58 wealthy individuals who founded the Ri in 1799 and is just as relevant today. But to achieve the full benefits of what science has to offer, we must ensure that there is a healthy and dynamic interaction between science and society – something we have pioneered for over 200 years.

This is why we believe that people of all ages should be encouraged to think more deeply about the wonders and applications of science.

It's short, maybe 1 hour, but a really excellent place for those interested in the origins of modern scientific analysis techniques. Michael Faraday's work is here, among other major scientists. They also apparently do special lectures for children around the holiday season. Do not that they're generally closed on weekends.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
If you're keen on science, you'll love the exhibitions here. As a pharmacist, I found many captivating displays, like vintage slides and old microscopes. Best of all, entry is free, and there's a café inside.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I have watched many of the famous Christmas lectures and have been meaning to visit for a long time. I finally got the chance and booked a lecture. It was a lecture squarely aimed at children but it was still very enjoyable. The auditorium was filled with families and all clearly had a great time, with the obligatory audience participation coming into play multiple times. Every member of staff was really friendly and enthusiastic and the whole event was run very well. If you are unsure about a visit, just go for it.
It was the first time I've ever been here and will definitely be back there again to learn more about the history of science. A good collection of things to see as well as a cafe downstairs. Available space if you'd like to book an event.
All about the greats that have been part of RI. Easily done quickly in 30 min, or spend more time to dig into the discoveries and achievements in science accomplished at RI.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This is such a cool place. It was my second time there 20 years apart and I enjoyed it very much again.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
The main part of this building is the Faraday Museum. It illustrates the contributions and inventions of the great Michael Faraday along with other scientists who worked at the Royal Institution. In display are Faraday's egg, coils used by him for his invention on electromagnetism, his lab behind the glass doors, the spectacles worn by him in the lab and many more. It's a shame that this is open only during weekdays but it's totally worth a visit. Do check out the theatre in the first floor where the Christmas lectures happen.
Science thriving right in the centre of London! An excellent place of historic significance for science enthusiasts with regular lectures from experts in their own field covering the great depths and breath of science. Enjoyed an evening with Nobel Laureate Prof Ramakrishnan discussing molecular biology, ageing, ethics all summed up in his book 'Why we die'. To sum it all up very fortunate to have got an author signed copy too.
I've always wanted to visit the Royal Institution, ever since I watched the Christmas Lectures as a kid, 40+ years ago... It doesn't disappoint! You'll see equipment used by many famous scientists to demonstrate their discoveries, plus there is the impressive library. Loved it!Visited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedYes
I have no idea why it has taken me so long to realise that I can just go here, rather than watching their lectures and demonstrations online. This really is the home of science, and the live experiments make the most complex concepts accessible to all. Such a diverse range of attendance, I thoroughly recommend booking if you are in London and have time!
