Story

Conceived out of a stall on Chesterfield Market in the 1980’s, the shop Rocky Horrors opened on 13th October 1990, on the top floor of a very old and rickety Dickensian little mesters (cuttlery workshop) on Cambridge Street in the centre of Sheffield, selling rock and heavy metal merchandise.

Older customers may remember the all black interior with ‘blood’ dripping down the walls, no windows, the roof that continually leaked and the ingenious system which caught all the water and sometimes the plaster and directed it into a bucket hanging precariously from a nail above the changing room.

Luckily we never had a visit from health and safety who would almost certainly have closed us down for the state of the stairs alone nevermind the staff toilet with its clear view through the floor to the courtyard below!

However we did once have a visit from the police about our ground floor window display. Aparantly a woman had complained because the rock chick manequin holding a severed head had frightened her son, so we were told to change it. We dutifully obliged and replaced the offending head for a 4 foot inflatable penis with a sign on it saying “Would you prefer this Madam?” We don’t know if she saw it but we left it there for a week or two.

We eventually had to move out in 1998 when we were told the building was to be redeveloped. We moved to a ‘proper shop’ on Division Street on the ground floor with windows! And bang opposite a pub which brewed the strongest beer in the world!

We outgrew these premises and moved 50 yards across the road in 2003, and again in 2009 to our current location and what must now be one of the most impressive shops of its kind in the country for the rock, goth, punk, and alternative scene, with many customers from out of town making a special trip to Sheffield to visit this one shop.

Regularly visited by rock bands playing in the city, one American artist even described it as the best shop of its kind he had ever been in. In the world! Wow!

A shadow of its former glory. How awesome this shop was in its day, now it's reduced to a small attic space above a fancy dress shop. The staff are still wonderful and their range of alternative/goth attire is still incredible but alas, there is not much of it anymore..... Sadly not disabled friendly.

This used to be a pretty decent shop for your alternative/gothic apparel. The shop had a good range of new rock boots and alternative shoes as well as all the usual brands for clothing and jewellery Alchemy etc. Unfortunately it seems to have taken a turn for the worse the down stairs is now a fancy dress shop and what remains upstairs is a shadow of its former self. If your passing its ok for a look but don’t go out your way.
