Prospect Of Whitby

Story

The Prospect of Whitby dates back to 1520 and the days of Henry VIII. Originally called "The Pelican" it was better known the Devil's Tavern, reflecting the clientele of the day - smugglers, thieves, pirates and the like. After a fire in the 1700's the pub was rebuilt in 1770 and named "Prospect of Whitby" after a ship that used to moor outside. The pub today retains it's historic character with numerous pictures showing the pub and the area over the last few centuries. The pub's reaturant was popular in the 1950's/60's with such famous stars as Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and even royals including Princess Margaret, Lord Snowdon, Prince Ranier of Monaco and Grace Kelly. A warm welcome awaits locals and visitors from across London, the UK and the world with a wide range of Britiish cask ales, lagers, ciders, international wines and spirits. We serve great quality traditional pub fayre all day, every day and we're always willing to adapt dishes to personal taste. We also have rooms available for private hire or private dining. Come visit to experience a traditional and atmospheric London pub with fantastic views over the River Thames.

I love coming here. On my last visit, I brought relatives from overseas who enjoyed all the history. We had an early dinner, and actually I think they could have given us a table upstairs when I called up, because when we went up, it was pretty empty, booked for people coming later. Instead, we managed to come early enough for a table downstairs. I definitely prefer upstairs, but don't mind being downstairs too. It does feel like pubs are getting busier. They are a cheaper option for going out and I do think they are an important part of our community, so like to support them. If it's your first time, check out the signs on the staircase and upstairs. Also, it's lovely to go to the outdoor area both upstairs and downstairs. The history and views are wonderful.
Really nice traditional pub. Haven't been here in years, but shouldn't leave it so long next time. Wonderful Historic atmosphere, well kept ale and always nice to have a glass with a handle. Decent food at not over the top prices. Starters were excellent; vegetarian burger was very pleasant. Crab burger looked fantastic if perhaps not as flavoursome as I was anticipating, but nice.
if these walls could talk.... ....they would say this is a great place. obviously there's a lot of history because this has been around for over 500 years, however, the inside has been updated and looks modern. The restaurant has two floors as well as outdoor seating. The ambiance is nice with just the right amount of noise to add to the atmosphere. Tables are a good distance apart and comfortable. The food is exceptional and the serving sizes are more than generous. everything is well cooked, seasoned, and the sauces were plentiful. ait's not a large menu, which is good, generally it means the food is freshly prepared. there are fish, chicken, beef, and some veggie options as well. The service was helpful, patient, and attentive. it is a unique place and definitely worth trying.
Really decent pub with amazing outdoor terraces for drinking on the bank of the Thames. Lots of drinks on offer, plenty of history to enjoy inside and out, and it looks like it does decent food too. Will visit again, no doubt, and will get food. Beer selection was great: we came and played cards on the upper terrace with a couple drinks on a Wednesday and it was reasonably busy.
A very interesting place to visit, as it is so old ! A nice selection of beers and great view on the Thames river. The beers are totally fine. We did not eat because we came here in the middle of the afternoon so I can't comment on the food.
My new favourite pub on the river. We had the duck hash and steak and ale pie. Very good so we decided to book Christmas lunch here. Oh the beer is quite nice too.
The history of this place is amazing. It is the oldest riverside pub in London. Parts of the floor are still original. We were there when the tide was coming in so it was cool to see the water rising. The food and drinks were great and the staff was friendly. Even though it is a bit out of the way, it is totally worth the trip.
An amazing pub overlooking the Thames. Two balcony areas overlook the river to the rear. The bottom of which is closed at high tide due to flooding. This is a Green King pub, but maintains its own historical interior. The pub is large and serves food. It has many visitors, making it feel a little like a tourist attraction.
My husband and I visited the pub last Sunday, and the experience was far from ideal. When we arrived, I noticed several free tables in the dining area, yet we were told, “No reservation, no table.” So, we moved to the bar, quickly booked a table through their website, and returned to the dining room. When I mentioned we had made a reservation, the waitress didn’t seem pleased and said she would ask her colleague. Another staff member eventually showed us to a free table, but it wasn’t the window seat I had hoped for. I asked if we could sit by the window, which was still empty, but she said it was reserved for guests who had booked through the same system. I pointed out that the website didn’t allow us to choose specific tables, so how could they assign one to someone else? She grew more frustrated and insisted the table was for another reservation, so we sat where we were told without making a fuss. We decided to order one Sunday roast and one burger, but once again, we were informed the burger wasn’t available. This was the third time we’d been to this pub, and food availability is always an issue—either they’re out of something, or the wait is far too long. We’ve yet to actually have a full meal here! Resigned, we ordered two Sunday roasts and two glasses of red wine. When the wine arrived, I noticed my glass had lipstick stains on it. I politely asked the waitress to replace it, and while she did, it was clear she wasn’t happy about it. After another ten minutes, she came back to tell us that the roast was also finished. At that point, I was frustrated, and my husband asked if we could cancel the wine, as we had ordered it specifically to accompany our meal. She disappeared for another 15 minutes to consult her manager, and when she finally returned, she confirmed we could cancel the order. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and a fantastic location, but the management and service are seriously lacking. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning. P.S. While we were there, none of the empty tables ever got filled, yet they still insisted on reservations, even though they didn’t have enough food in the kitchen to serve their guests.
Nice big place, there are 2 stories so there was no problem finding a table. We only had some pints but their menu looked really good too. It was a nice cozy spot, with some views of the ThamesFood: 5/5
