It is notable as the former brewery tap of the Manns Albion brewery, where the first modern Brown Ale was brewed. The pub was built in 1894 on the site of an inn which had been established before 1654, and takes its name from the legend of Henry de Montfort. The pub is known for Ronnie Kray's murder of George Cornell in front of witnesses, and as the location of William Booth's first sermon, which led to the creation of the Salvation Army.HistoryThe pub was built in 1894 on the site of an inn which had been established before 1654, and named after the legend of Henry de Montfort, a son of Simon de Montfort. In 1865, William Booth preached his first open-air sermon outside the Blind Beggar, which led to the establishment of the East London Christian Mission, later to become the Salvation Army. A London pub with history. Could do with renovating and decorating. Pub cat was chilled. Obviously a busy pub on the High Street as it has a huge bar. There's a lovely little garden area to the side. Fair range of beers and other options. Change given has a Blind Begger sticker on, that was unique and fun.
The only positive about the The Blind Beggar is the resident cat that sits chilled on the bar. The pub trades on it's notoriety of the shooting of George Cornell by Ronnie Kray. The bar staff are unfriendly and disinterested, which ok they don't have to force a smile or be chatty as they're doing their job but it doesn't make the pub welcoming. There is one particular male member of staff who is aggressive and rude and probably causes a lot of arguments. Me and my mate had about quarter of a pint left and it was close to closing time, there was still roughly 30 people left in the pub. The call of "we're closing up drink up now" was said which is fair enough. I would say literally 10 seconds after he said it he then said to myself and my mate "didn't you hear what I said drink up now" I looked around and on other tables there were still other groups who were still drinking and had full pints and other drinks on the go, my mate politely said we're leaving don't worry. The barman obviously didn't fancy confronting groups of people to leave or maybe because he knows them who knows. There are other pubs around the area which deserve custom other than The Blind Beggar. Give it a swerve.
A really lovely East End boozer with an interesting history if you’re a Kray’s fan. Nice outdoor space for relaxing in the sun. Friendly and polite staff and a gorgeous bar cat too!
Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in the history of the place. The area is bright and vibrant with lots of great market stalls along the road if you walk or just a hop, skip and a jump from the station. The public house service is great with a huge beer garden and call buttons to request attention. I will go back and spend more time there.
Historic #London gangster paradise, spacious, good #beer selection, great vibe, #courtyard #pub with #pooltable and good #vintage mid 19th century feel.
Such a lovely pub! Felt like a traditional English pub with really friendly staff and they even had their own little cat service. Without glamourising the gang culture, there were obvious connections to the Kray brothers with affiliated members taking pictures outside.
Friendly staff, great atmosphere, creepy toilet cubicle I'm sure the ghost of George Cornell was watching me take a dump. Interior is like a time warp excellent pub. Beer garden great vibe I could go on
Where do I start... What a iconic and historically significant building.. Up to date with most people's drinking requirements and as welcoming as a brasshouse to a seasoned sailor... I love the gaff.. The landlord is next level accommodating and the staff are friendly also... Get down there lively and enjoy yourselves.
I have to say the blind beggar is one of the best london east end pubs I've been in since I moved here 5 years ago. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was like nothing I've experienced before. Would definitely recommend going there for a few drinks
The Blind Beggar. Part one. The ' Krays ' This Famous Pub is best known for being one of the haunts of the Kray Twins, Ronnie and Reggie . One dark night a member of the Richardsons gang, George Cornell a local career criminal was disrepecting the Krays after one pint too many in the blind beggar. The strange part of this story was that George went to school with the Krays. He joined the Watney streeters gang, after leaving school before going back to his friends, the Krays. He then switched sides by joining the Richardsons. True rival gangs. News quickly got back to the brothers, who were not pleased. He was on his last warning !!!... On hearing that George was yet again drunk and slagging off Ronnie, something this time changed. He has gone too far !!!... The Krays rushed to the blind beggar, only to find George, in a state, he even answered back !!!.... This was too much, much to Reggies amazement Ronnie had a gun in his pocket. With his hackles up, he pushed George against the wall and pulled the trigger. To this day the bullet hole can still be seen preserved behind glass. On our visit, this was a pleasant pub with very friendly people. Food is served and the odd pint or two drunk. I would highly recommend that you visit this establishment, if just for the ambience and historical value. How did this place get its name ???.. I will leave that to you to discover or follow us for we will tell you later. As a pub, Highly recommended !!!!!. Don't forget your hotdogs and play with the famous cats !!!...
