Painswick Rococo Garden

About

Designed in the 1740s as a pleasure garden for holding intimate garden parties, this hidden valley is now the country's only surviving rococo garden.

Story

Painswick Rococo Garden is set in a hidden Cotswold valley and dates from Georgian times. Over the last 30 years it has been restored to its original layout as depicted in a painting dated 1748. The Garden now allows you to step back into the sensual early 18th century, when gardens were becoming theatrical and romantic backdrops for entertaining guests. During the Rococo period, home owners competed amongst themselves to create flamboyant designs and sought to visually surprise their visitors with architecture and vistas rather than the horticultural unusual.

Here at Painswick, contemporary follies nestle next to dramatic views and woodland walks. We are particularly proud of our large kitchen garden which was created right in the middle of the original design layout. We grow many forms of heritage fruit and vegetables.

The Garden can also offer an unusual and romantic setting for civil weddings and partnership ceremonies.

Our cafe serves a delicious range of homemade cakes and light meals using products grown here or from local producers. It makes the perfect stopping point even if you haven’t time to enjoy the Garden on this visit and is popular with locals. For 2014 we can now offer free wi-fi access.

We have a free car park and dogs are welcome in the grounds on leads.

We are open from 10th January to 31st October, daily from 10.30 to 17.00

Fantastic day out for all the family. The gardens are beautiful and the cafe serves an excellent variety of cakes and lunches. It is quite hilly so if you struggle with walking it could prove tough. Definitely worth a visit, we are going back in a month to see the spring flowers.

When you first walk in the Painswick Rococo Gardens in February you are expecting snowdrops, and you don't see what you are looking for. But this is an all year gardens and the snowdrops are displayed magnificently in an extensive wooded Glen. There are some lovely gardens to wander around on the way to the Snowdrop Grove, including a great little maze. Another visit needed later in the to see what's on offer in the other seasons.

Good place to have a walk through and to enjoy the views. It takes about an hour to see the whole garden. Have a look at the little store for some local products, the honey is very nice 🍯

Beautiful - great to keep kids amused and a lovely place to spend time in. You need to be reasonably fit and sure on your feet to appreciate the whole garden - some bits quite steep / not wheel friendly.

Stunning display of snow drops, I'd really recommend a visit at this time of year. The cafe is splendid, with a nice choice of lunch options and a sun trap area for al fresco dining. We hope to visit again in spring / summer to see the garden in full bloom 😊.
